Boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr's controversial appearance in Bristol has been axed amidst planned protests from a feminist society.

The undefeated world champion, who retired from the sport last year, was due to discuss his career at an event taking place at Colston Hall on Tuesday.

Fight Abuse Bristol (FAB) strongly opposed the venue's booking due to the sportsman's domestic violence convictions. Julie Zerlang set up a petition and a protest was planned on the evening of the Bristol event.

She released a statement on behalf FAB and those who were against the boxer coming to city
"We welcome the news that the event An Evening with Floyd Mayweather has been cancelled," she read.

"Our opposition, petition and planned protest came from a place of hurt. A place of hurt for the many women who daily suffer domestic abuse, and for their children who are equally affected by these atrocities.

"On average, two women die at the hands of their partner here in the UK and 750,000 children witness domestic violence every year, profoundly affecting them – as was the case with Mayweather Jr's own children. The issue is as poignant as ever, and deserves our attention."

None of Mayweather's other UK appearances have been cancelled with promoters claiming the decision to cancel the Bristol show had nothing to do with the opposition.

Bristol-based rapper D-Jukes, who runs US/UK Promotions, was overseeing the event.

He said: "The appearance has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

"The cancellation has nothing to do with a planned protest and this has been brought about due to family reasons pertaining to the promoter in Cardiff.

"Floyd Mayweather Jr will continue his successful European tour as planned with a variety of promoters here and it is a tremendous opportunity for boxing fans to meet him."

Colston Hall hasn't clarified why the event has been cancelled but have reassured ticketholders they'll be given a full refund.

Ms Zerlang said: "Regardless of the reasons given by the promoters and Colston Hall, we have been pleased with the attention our cause has been given by the media and the public who supported this campaign.

"In standing up together, we have spread awareness for this important cause, and have proved that anyone can make a difference if they choose to make their voices heard. All of this has been accomplished in the space of a week, and is testament to the power of our voices if only we dare speak up."

Anyone affected by domestic violence is strong enco
