Embarrassing: Nikon apparently didn't notice it had been faked

Nikon were left red-faced when they announced the winner of a photography competition - without realising the picture was a fake.

The camera company's Singapore office revealed that amateur snapper Chay Yu Wei had claimed the coveted prize of a trolley bag for his impressive shot.

He claimed to have taken a perfectly framed photograph of a low-flying plane over Singapore, shot by chance as he was climbing a ladder.

But eagle-eyed photographers noticed one thing was wrong with the picture - it had clearly been Photoshopped .

And soon, other keyboard warriors were offering some of their own hilarious entries - including Darth Vader, Godzilla and other funny characters floating in the sky.

A faint white box can be seen around the plane, suggesting it had been added to the picture with some computer wizardry.

Nikon fans were quick to point out the obvious error and called the camera experts out for awarding the prize to a manipulated image.

The original Facebook post read: "Yu Wei chanced upon a set of ladders while on a photowalk with his friends in Chinatown, and thought the view above would make an interesting perspective.

"Little did he expect to catch an airplane in mid-air. We’ll try looking up too, Yu Wei."

Kang Heong replied: "I believe the story behind the image is closer to: 'Yu Wei chanced upon a set of ladders and thought the view above would look nicer with a plane.

"He went home and digitally manipulated the picture to add an airplane."

Others sent in their own versions - one saw Vader's head floating in the air, while others were 'shopped with trains, rollercoasters and even a bride coming down the ladder towards the camera.

Nikon took the joke well - but they might want to look a bit closer at their entries in the future.
