CONSPIRACY theorists claim this sculpture could be proof the ancient Greeks were visited by time travellers who brought them laptops from the future.

The ancient Greek funerary relief sculpture from about 100BC, shows a young attendant girl holding an object that appears to be open at a right angle for a distinguished looking woman to view.

It is kept in the J Paul Getty Museum, in Malibu, California, USA, where experts describe the object as a shallow chest.

But after people began posting snaps of the sculpture on social media, claims came thick and fast that the object was a modern-day laptop, somehow transported back to ancient Greece from the future.

YouTube conspiracy theory channel StillSpeakingOut uploaded a video on the sculpture entitled ‘Ancient Greek sculpture depicting a laptop?’

The video narration said the sculpture: "depicts an astonishing object which bears a striking resemblance with a modern laptop or some hand-held device.

"In another picture taken by a random tourist from a better angle we can see that the object is wide with a structure too narrow to be a jewel box and it does not match the depictions of the mythical Pandora's Box.

Conspiracists say the "laptop" even has two cable ports

Back from the future: The laptop in its correct, modern setting

"I am not saying that this relief is depicting an ancient laptop computer, but when I look at the sculpture and think about Greek tales about the Oracle of Delphe, which was supposed to allow the priests to connect with the gods and retrieve advanced information of various aspects, I can't help but thinking that Erich von Däniken has been right all this time and that most of these myths of magical artefacts given by the gods to a very restricted group of individuals in ancient civilisations were high-tech devices similar to what we have today."

Mr von Däniken is a Swiss author of several pseudoscientific books which claim early civilisations were visited and aided by advanced aliens from another dimension which helped them build such amazing buildings such as the Egyptian pyramids.

Conspiracists insist the object in the sculpture is too think to be a wax tablet - a folding wooden device coated in wax, with which a stylus was used to write on.

They also said that the figure was not holding a stylus and appeared to instead be using it like a touch screen notepad or laptop of today.

The two holes visible in the bottom half of the object have also been suggested as USB or cable ports for the modern-day device.

But sceptics have laughed off the suggestion as ludicrous, explaining that wax tablets, complete with the stylus have appeared in other Roman art.

An image by vase painter Douris from around 500 BC shows a seated man holding what looks like a laptop, but with a stylus hovering over it.

Conspiracy theorists keen to find evidence of time travel have unearthed many pictures and videos that appear to show modern day objects in historic settings such as women in the 1920s appearing to talk on mobile phones.

However, convincing explanations as to why they were not modern devices have come forward.

Others such as a minature modern watch allegedly found inside an ancient Chinese tomb, and more recently a clay mobile phone covered in ancient writing that was allegedly found during an archaeological did ended up being exposed as hoaxes.

One person who saw the video posted under the user name EmperorPangulo: "Time travelling person showing our future technology to noble people - holy mother time travel proves real."

But others blasted it is just a wax tablet or chest.

What if it had the ancient letters A C E and R inscribed upon it, and the company Acer, many years later named itself after an ancient Greek sculpture that really was a representation of one of their laptops?
