A 40-year-old Italian woman could be jailed for up to six years after her husband took her to court for not doing enough housework.
The woman’s husband claims that her management of household chores is of low quality and that it has led to the mistreatment of the family, according to The Local. The husband also reported that he had been forced to live in conditions of poor hygiene and that his wife barely cooked.
The man claims he has suffered from negligence for over two years, according to The Independent.
The trial is expected to take place in October. If convicted, the woman could face two to six years in jail.
Interestingly, campaigners in Italy have called for women who work in the home and their male counterparts to receive a salary in an effort to improve equality. However, the proposal has not been widely supported.
Daniela Del Boca, an economics professor at the University of Turin, noted the salary would be a “disincentive” to look for a job.
