An Australian mother was outraged when she happened upon a pair of baby girl shorts that were skimpier than male options.

Nikita Friedman shared a photo on Facebook comparing girl and boy sizes at Australian store Big W while shopping for her 1-year-old daughter.

Friedman said that the comparison was an example of gender bias, which she called "disgusting."

"I couldn't find a single pair of shorts in the girls section today with an inseam of more than a couple of [centimeters]," she wrote. "Where is the variety and choice for parents looking to teach their children about sun safety and self respect?"

"Why on Earth does my one-year-old need to have shorts so short that her nappy is hanging out?" she added. "Little girls are not sex objects."

After Friedman's post went viral, she edited it to include more thoughts on the subject.

"The simple fact is that numbers talk and maybe seeing 1600 parents agree with my post after only 5 hours might make Big W stand up and listen for once to what parents want," she said.

"We're all just trying to be the best parents we can. I want to teach my child about self respect, modesty and confidence from a young age, and set standards now for what my expectations of her will be in the future."

Big W later responded to the controversial post, saying that they would discuss her complaints and respond directly. The store told Mashable that it "undertakes a rigorous buying process to ensure we stock a wide range of children's apparel to suit a variety of customer needs and tastes."
