Viola Beach, a promising group from Warrington, Cheshire, are believed to have died when their car plunged into a canal in Stockholm.

The indie-rock group, who played at Reading and Leeds Festival last year and had airtime on Radio 1, were inside a black car which drove off a bridge and landed in a canal 80ft below.

The members of the group are singer Kris Leonard, guitarist River Reeves, bass player Tomas Lowe and drummer Jack Dakin.

Manager Craig Tarry, who was in the car with the band, also died.

The vehicle broke through the barriers of a bridge over a canal in Stockholm’s Södertälje district and plunged into the water in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The bridge had been opened to let ships pass through, and was in the process of closing when the car broke through the barriers.

Witness Jonny Alexandersson told one Swedish newspaper that the car shot past a queue of waiting vehicles, and was going as fast as 50mph.

Tributes poured in on social media for the young band after the news of their deaths broke on Sunday.

Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, who had played Viola Beach tracks on his show, said: "So sorry to hear the news about Viola Beach and their manager. The saddest news. Thinking of all their families at this awful time."

The Enemy, an indie-rock band with three top ten albums, also paid tribute to their fellow musiciains.

Warrington local Ryan Wilford said: "Such a shame about Viola Beach, such a loss for Warrington and the music world! Life is so cruel!"

A Twitter account linked to the BBC Introducing programme posted: "So sad to hear the news about band Viola Beach and our long time friend their manager Craig Tarry"

The four-piece band's final gig was a performance at the Where’s the Music? Festival in Norrkoping, Sweden on Friday night.

An industry source who saw their last performance told Express.co.uk that music industry figures were impressed and exciting by the promising group.

They had been due to play a concert at the Boiler Room venue in Guildford, Surrey, on Saturday night, but the gig was called off.

The band members - who describe themselves as "beer-drinking pals who just happen to make music" - are all from Warrington and were well-known locally.

Frontman Mr Leonard and drummer Mr Dakin knew each other from primary school and rekindled their friendship over a love of music.

They played the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds last year, around the same time they released debut single Swings and Waterslides.

The group had more than 25 planned gigs for the rest of the year, including a slot at the trendy South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

According to Swedish police, the youngest band member was just 20 years old. The oldest casualty - believed to be the band’s manager - was said to be in his 30s.

Authorities in Stockholm have not yet said what caused the accident, which happened early on Saturday morning.

Swedish media reports said that warning lamps on the bridge were flashing and two barriers were blocking the road at the time of the crash.

The Foreign Office confirmed that five British citizens had died.

A spokesman told Express.co.uk: "We can confirm that five British Nationals died in a car accident in Sweden on 13th February.

"We are in contact with local authorities and are supporting the families at this very difficult time."
