A British man who allegedly told a woman he would marry her so she would sleep with him has been arrested in India.
The alleged victim said she met Crispin Lamont, from Perth, Scotland, on Facebook, and they slept together after the 40-year-old told her he would marry her.
When Lamont, who runs a chain of gyms in Delhi, left the 30-year-old, she reported him to police, who arrested him and charged him with rape. Under Indian law a man can be charged with rape if the woman he slept with consented in the false believe they would marry afterwards.
Lamont, who has been in India for a decade, claims he is a former officer in the British Army, a karate champion, a national downhill slalom skier and a Guinness World Record holder.
The law which deems Lamont’s alleged crime rape has been at the centre of national debate in India. A number of people believe that it trivialises a crime which has led to the deaths of women.
In a 2013 annual report from the National Crime Records Bureau, 24,924 causes of rape were reported across India in 2012.
