The painting - The Glorification of the Eucharist painted by Ventura Salimbeni in 1595 which hangs in Florence, Italy, - is of the Holy Trinity, Jesus, God and a dove representing the Holy Ghost.

But an alarming number of alien hunters and Conspiracy theorists have dreamed up an outlandish theory that the spherical object between them shows the pair with futuristic technology.

Sputnik was the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth launched by the Soviet Union in 1957.

Steve Mera, heads the Manchester Association of Paranormal Investigation & Training (MAPIT), one of the UK's biggest paranormal organisations.

He tours the country speaking at conferences where he puts forward the proposition.

Steve Mera outlines the theory at a UFO conference

At one conference attend by Express.co.uk, he explained the theory.

He said: "You start to find a lot of religious conotation linked in with the UFO phenomenon

"This painting (the Eucharist) was painted in the 1600s and nobody ever really knew what that was a painting of, until we kind of looked at Sputnik, which was the first satellite to pass round the Earth.

"What is really, really interesting is it is surprisingly similar to Sputnik, even to the point there is a little nodule there (on Sputnik) and the exact same nodule on the side there (on the object in the painting)."

He said when the painting was made, there would have been no knowledge of Sputnik.

He added: "Did they somehow have knowledge of future events?

Many people have come forward regarding the UFO subject around the work and when they reported being contacted or abducted, they often report being shown or told events in the future.

"Or is it just a strange coincidence, if it is, then what is it? It certainly looks mechanical, and painted in the 1600s."

Mr Mera is one of many floating the idea.

Website AncientUFO.org says of the painting: "The top part shows the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and a dove depicting the Holy Ghost holding what seems to be a space satellite. The object is large and spherical, with a metallic finish, telescopic antennas, and strange lights. In fact, it heavily resembles an old Sputnik satellite."

One poster said on beforeitsnews.com, another website to look at Christ's time travelling credentials, said: "If he could turn water in to wine, walk on water, and raise the dead, then why couldn’t he be a time traveller right?"

But if they have convinced you Jesus was an intergalactic time traveller, consider this.

Several sceptics have also considered the painting and what it portrays.

There is a different consensus among these, who believe, instead the sphere is a the orb is a Sphaera Mundi, a globe-like representation of the universe.

The Sphaera Mundi can be found in other religious artwork.

It stems from a time when we believed earth was the centre of the universe, and the yellow area is not a light, but the sun and the nodule is the moon.

The sputnik aerials are in fact scepter wands being held by the pair, according to the debunkers.

So maybe time travel is eminent and we are seeing things being gently altered without causing a butterfly effect..
