A dog waited faithfully for his owner to come home for weeks after he was murdered, standing guard outside their apartment door.

Neighbours noticed the German Shepherd following cars to see who was inside, before returning to his post on the stairs.

Although they left food and water, he wouldn’t respond to their efforts and appeared lost.

American news channel ABC reported that his owner, 54-year-old Hatem Abuharbid, was shot dead by the ‘worst of mankind’ while working at a corner shop nearby in Houston, Texas.

Thieves burst in to hold-up the store on February 7, and one of them shot Abuharbid in the leg, piercing an artery.

It proved fatal and he died in hospital – but of course, nobody could explain to his dog why his owner hadn’t arrived back home as expected.

‘You could just tell that he was a lost dog,” neighbor Cassandra Eubanks told ABC.

‘He would follow the cars and when he would realize that it was not his owner’s car, he would just stand there and look helpless.’

After someone appealed for help on social media, Maranda Perez answered the call and tried to help the dog by taking food and a lead as well as her own pet.

‘It just broke my heart to hear that the poor animal lost his owner, his best friend,’ she said.

The dog was so shaken he ran up three flights of stairs before Maranda was able to get to him, and it took an hour before the dog started to trust her enough to wear the lead.

For the moment, Maranda is fostering him but the brother of the dog’s murdered owner hopes to adopt him soon.

Police told ABC the murder investigation is ongoing.
