STEAMY new BBC show Versailles is causing controversy for its graphic sex scenes before it has even aired on television.
The French-made period drama by Canal+ has been described by the broadcaster as a "delicious treat", however many have criticised them for bringing "porn" to primetime.
The ten-part series follows the debauched life of France's Sun King, Louis XIV, and reportedly cost £21 million to make.
According to reports, the opening episode features gay sex, cross-dressing, a monarch with a penchant for dwarves and plenty of nudity.
Versailles doesn't hold back on violence either, with The Mail On Sunday claiming the opener features one of the king’s men beating a man to death with a hammer.

Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen hit out, telling the newspaper: "There are channels where, if you wish to view this sort of material, you would have to pay for it. BBC viewers don’t have a choice. They have to pay for it whether they approve or not."
He continued: "Is this an example of the BBC dumbing down and seeking more sensationalised programming? That’s an arms race to the bottom – quite literally in this case."
Versailles is expected to hit screens in May, with the BBC head of programme acquisition, Sue Deeks, stating: "Versailles will be a delicious treat for BBC Two viewers - the historical setting is magnificent, the costumes are stunning and the series tells a fascinating story with intelligence, wit and stylish Gallic flair."

Meanwhile Sam Burnett, of Mediawatch UK, added: "Dressing up pornography and violence in a cravat and tights doesn’t make it cultural."
The racy offering also caused a stir when it was shown in France, but not for its nudity. Instead viewers complained that the famous story was "dumbed down" by producers.
