A four-year-old boy died after his stepmother plunged him into boiling water as punishment.
Ohio police answered a call from Anna Ritchie on Wednesday morning after she claimed she woke up and found her stepson Austin Cooper lifeless and not breathing.
Paramedics found the child unresponsive, and rushed him to hospital to be revived. However, he was pronounced dead soon afterwards.
Ritchie told police she had put the child’s legs in boiling water as a punishment the previous evening.
She said she put him to bed straight afterwards, and didn’t believe he was injured at all.
However, the 25-year-old stepmother was then arrested on suspicion of child endagerment – a second-degree felony in the state.
The exact cause of Austin’s death is still under investigation, and a post-mortem is due to be performed by the Warren County Coroner.
Further charges could be filed against Ritchie, CBS News reported.
