When a Florida man was told he could not purchase a BMW with an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card and a credit card, he allegedly stole the car instead.

Nicholas Jackson, 36, recently attempted to purchase a BMW X-6 SUV with a price tag of $60,000 from a Pompano Beach dealership with food stamps, the cash value of which being loaded on an EBT card, and a credit card, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s office, the New York Daily News reports.

He was rejected, presumably because purchasing a car is not allowed under the Florida state benefits program. Items you can purchase with an EBT card include bread, cereal, fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, and dairy products, according to the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program’s website. Alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, nonfood items, such as soap, diapers, and household supplies, are not allowed.

Jackson may be receiving cash benefits from the state, but still, an EBT card is not an accepted form of payment at a car dealership, only grocery stores and some other retailers accept the card.

The evening after Jackson was denied the car purchase, the dealership was burglarized and keys to 60 vehicles went missing, as did a BMW.

On March 18, Martin ran out of gas while driving the BMW and was apprehended by Martin County deputies.

They traced the car and dozens of keys found inside back to the dealership where the robbery took place.

Jackson has been charged with grand theft auto and is being held on $20,000 bond.
