DETROIT - Modou Diagne came from his native Senegal to Detroit in search of a better life. He had been driving for Uber for the past three years to support his wife and children.

"He was working all the time, no days off. Sometimes 19 hours a day," said niece Fatima Diop.

So it was no surprise Diagne was driving Saturday night into Sunday morning. His car crashed at the intersection of Livernois and Joy on the city's west side.

At first, people thought it was a case of drunk driving, until police got to the scene and realized he'd been shot twice and was dead.

Uber drivers carry no cash, but whoever did this to him stole his phone.

Police paid a visit to the family's west side home to give them the news. His wife, Batal, is pregnant and she already has three children under the age of 6. Her English is limited, but she told Local 4 News through a family member she has nowhere to go and doesn't feel safe.

Uber driver attacked in St. Charles, IL

An Uber driver sought refuge at a St. Charles gas station Sunday night after his passenger attacked him while driving and, once parked, threatened him with a knife, police said.

St. Charles Deputy Police Chief Dave Kintz said the incident began about 10:37 p.m., when the 54-year-old Uber driver picked up St. Charles resident Tyler Royer, 26, in Campton Hills.

The driver was relying on Royer to direct him to the destination, but Royer passed out, Kintz said.

When the driver began speaking loudly to get Royer’s attention, Royer became enraged and started attacking the driver while he was driving, Kintz said. He said Royer reached around the headrest with both hands and grabbed the driver’s face, causing him to almost veer off the road at 45 mph in the area of Peck Road and Route 64 in western St. Charles.

Kintz noted Royer was also punching and kicking the car’s interior. The driver pulled into a gas station at Randall Road and Route 64, Kintz said, adding the driver tried to get Royer out of the car.

“As he’s doing this, Royer has pulled a knife on him,” Kintz said, describing the knife as about 4 inches long.

Royer lunged at the driver with the weapon, and the driver took refuge inside the gas station, telling the employee to call 911, Kintz said. As police arrived, Royer took off running and threw the knife in a nearby retention pond before officers took him into custody, Kintz said.

Royer, of the 1600 block of Avalon Court, St. Charles, was charged with aggravated assault, reckless conduct and two counts of battery, Kintz said, noting each of the charges were misdemeanors.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (KABC) --
An investigation is underway after an Uber driver was fatally shot in Inglewood early Sunday morning, police said.

Authorities responded to the 3700 block of W. 109th Street around 4 a.m. following several reports of shots fired. Upon their arrival, they found a man who had been struck by gunfire. His vehicle, a black Nissan with dealer plates, was riddled with bullet holes.

The victim, identified as Andre Jamal Bayyan, was pronounced dead at the scene. Bayyan's age was not released but officials said he was from Los Angeles.

An Uber spokesperson confirmed Bayyan was on a trip at the time of his murder, but did not clarify if he was en route to pick a passenger up or if he was dropping someone off when he was fatally shot.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with his friends, family and loved ones. We have proactively reached out to the authorities to offer our assistance in their investigation," Uber said in a statement Monday morning.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown. A description of the suspect was not immediately released.
