A man who climbed up an 80ft tree is refusing to come down - after more than 12 hours.

Emergency services were called to the Sequoia tree in Seattle, Washington, at 11.30am local time.

Police and firefighters spent most of the day attempting to coax the man down, even extending a ladder within inches of the man's location in the foliage.

But despite their best efforts, the man would not be budged.

At the time of publishing this story, the man was still refusing to come down from the tree.

It has been reported by KOMO News that he has now been up the tree for more than 12 hours.

A reporter at the scene described the man as "agitated" and said he was "flipping the bird" at spectators.

By the fourth hour in the tree, the man had stripped off all the top branches.

At one stage, the man climbed halfway back down the tree, before pausing and changing his mind.

He has also been seen throwing apples at medics waiting on the ground below.

Seattle Police said the man claimed he was armed with a knife, but this has not been confirmed. He has also requested a pack of cigarettes.

The man's story is now being followed by thousands of 'fans' on Twitter, who are keeping up to date with the story with the hashtag #ManInTree.

Reportedly, the huge tree is iconic in Seattle, after being planted in the 1970s.

Officials have said they will review the health of the tree once the man is safely back on the ground.
