So this is the car your road racing

KevinD
03-28-2016, 09:41 PM
The one I will. Have the throttle body out for hand porting right now. Next month will buy new helmet ( mine is too old and won't pass tech). Sometime this year getting a 6 point cage. Got all the fluids changed for hpde days. The car with the optional 1LE track package, is race ready (ish), lol. The real road racer is the Z28, but my wallet ain't that fat, lol

The 1LE adds bigger sway bars, 20x10 and 20x11 forged rims, with sticky tires, close ratio M6, 3.91 rear gears, better struts and shocks, and some fluid coolers. Cosmetically, adds the flat black hood, spoiler and splitter. Not bad for $3,500 more than stock SS. It handles like a cart...flat and quick. Suspension and steering is very communicative. Imho, it's about the best bang for you buck entry level race ready car around. Of corse the new (2017) 1LE is lighter and more powerful, lol. It also cost an estimated $16,000 MORE than I paid for this one new

Looks pretty badass. If I saw that approaching in my mirror, I'd move to the right pronto.

I notice people do that for me, too. (I have a 2011 Mustang - V6 - but it looks the part to the uninformed with the Pony grille.)

KevinD
03-29-2016, 12:19 AM
It's not all that quick or fast... (my 99 Z28 was faster), but it will run mid to low 13 secs at 102-105 in the 1/4. The automatic SS are quicker, but this thing corners like you wouldn't believe, once the tires are up to temperature of course. I haven't put it on scales yet, but it's supposed to weigh around 3,800lbs. It shouldn't handle like it does. One thing I don't like about the stock tires is they stick, stick, stick, then dont. No warning other than a slight whine just before they slip. It's very neutral handling up until then though. I can't imagine how much better the Z28 is.

KevinD

I had it on a fairly quick 1mIle road course a bit ago. Was running consistent 56-57 second laps.

Here's my buddy's video on that track. His car is identical to mine, but he has headers and a tune. (And much more seat time)

i had some OE Dunlop tires that did that. Right in the middle of a right hander...on a rain soaked street. It was a FWD so I powered through. That is a scary situation!

A pleasure to watch your friend's video. He wasn't a jerk to the white car either, which was good to see.

KevinD

The white car was a M3. The blue one that ran off and left them is a GTR. They were in the intermediate class that day, I was in the novice, but almost turning as fast a lap as my buddy. He had non stock tires on, which limited him, and tbh, I don't like the lines he was running. I hit almost every curb, lol.

Won't be doing hypertech or any other handheld. Custom street and dtno tune using HP tuners software. Tune and go fast stuff not going on until warranty is up. Just rolled 10,000 miles on way home yesterday. Bought it in Nov with 47 miles new

Hypertech will do away with the rev limiter and add some timing and a possibly a few other things and it wont void the warranty.

Jay, nothing wrong with hypertech, if I was planning to stay somewhat stock, wouldn't be a bad way to go. I've used their product before. Currently I have my throttle body out for porting, next up is porting intake, (or a Fast LSx), headers, Mast Black Label heads, and a custom Cam Motion LLR solid roller cam. (Along with othet supportin mods) Shooting for 400 lb ft at 2500rpm, peak tq at 4800-5000 rpm, with peak at 450ish...rear wheel of course. Dyno # don't really matter, what I'm looking for is much more lower rpm tq, with a flat curve, and 2000 to 2500 range on the curve. Get the tq controlled, and hp will take care of itself, lol so, box type stuff won't work for what I want. It would be easier (and cheaper) to go supercharged or turbo, but, I want N/A...no heat sink on the track...

KevinD
04-15-2016, 01:54 AM
Hugh, thanks...means a lot to me. I really wanted the dark blue 1LE, but dealership made me too good of a deal on this one, and besides, my 68, and my 99 were both black.....When my oldest daughter saw the 15, she played "Back in Black" for me, lol

New tires: BF Goodrich G-force comp-2 A/S in 285/35/20. 100 load range, Y speed rating, 40,000 mile warranty. All 4 out the door for $950 with road hazzard.

Physically they are the same section width, but look wider on front rims (10") and narrower on rears (11")
The sidewalls are definitely softer, but that could be due to the tire shop putting them at 32psi. Max is rated for 51psi on these tires (hot). Once they cool down, I'm going to set cold at 40psi and see how that does. I'm not expecting them to handle like the OEM Goodyear F1 G2, but at least they should last longer. I had planned to sell on of the OEM tires, as I just had it replaced 2 weeks ago (1,100 miles ago) but when I took it out of the trunk, found a nail in it. SMH

285 is an awful lot of tyre for a front axle... that thing must grip like a motherfucker

KevinD
05-14-2016, 10:20 PM
With the stock 285/35/20 Goodyear f1 g2, yes, it sticks like a mofo. I only over drove it into a corner once, lol. Pretty sharp right hander followed immediately by a sharp left. On a normal vehicle, I can take it at 40ish (wife's car) with the goodyears, I've taken it at 65 and got way out of shape at 70mph. The new tires (BFG) are NOT corner carvers. Played a bit today on some roads with the car club. Fronts actually seem to stick okay for all seasons. The rears on the otherhand...no bueno. Squirmy as hell. Oh well, I'll drive with these tires until I get another set of rims, put these tires on new rims for daily driving, and put oem goodyears or better on stock rims.

So, a few miles later, (2,000 or so ) and I can confirm the BFG tires are awesome in the rain, but, on this car, not good for much else. They absolutely suxk when trying to power out of a corner. Haven't put them on a track, because the way they feel, it would be worthless, and I'd likely wreck. Roll bar is out for now, until I figure out if I'm going to track it only (conflicts with airbags) . I did just order the Z28 cold air intake, which should be good for 10 or so rwhp above 3000 rpm. Also, warranty compliant. I have header money ready to spend, just am waiting to decide which I want. Long term plan is still low to mid rpm torque, withe heads and cam. My delima is most of the off the shelf stuff is designed for peak HP. While that is all fine and great, it's not what I'm looking for. I've been talking with Cam Motion and Mast Motorsports, and I think we are close to getting what I want. It will involve a custom cam, and as per Kip with CM, a solid roller. I'm down with that, as the last solid lifer cam I had was in my 68 camaro, 468 BBC, and yes, it required more maintenance, but damn did it kick ass.

Oh, after all the questions I've gotten from folks, which I actually enjoy, I did put a sticker on the back window. My favorite response to the car so far gas been while rolling down the highway, heading into Houston, a guy in a 2014 or 2015 Viper GTS-R, pulled along side and gave me a thumbs up. His car is bad ass, and 3 times what mine cost, but, he gets it! Too cool. Anyway here's the sticker for the gas station groupies.

The new factory Z28 intake and filter. As per GM, it provides a 51% increase in airflow, and does not void warranty. Typical dyno results in 10-15 rear wheel hp increase.

Granted, my 68 was a pos, but rust free. 235ci 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree when I bought it for the stagering sum of $800. When I sold it, it had a 468ci big block, Doug Nash 5 speed overdrive, and 2.73:1 rear gears. Fast as hell. I beat a mid 80s turbo 911 from Houston to Galveston...lol

So, My Sharona aside, lol. Haven't done much lately. Track plans are on hold, as I'm mostly using the car to drive to work and back (1,000miles round trip) so have just done some cosmetic things. The front and rear bowtie were gold, so I replaced them with black powder coated aluminum inserts. I also put on black vinyl inserts in the SS emblems. Wasn't sure if I'd like that, but afterwards, when the vinyl starts wearing, I'll replace with metal inserts. Hers a couple pics. (Yes, it's been on the road course, as well as assc time trials)

Thanks guys. Haven't done anything to the Camaro, and racing may be on permanent hold. After an MRI, and other tests, I've been informed I shouldn't race due to some neck problems related to previous crashes. So, just been enjoying driving the car and spending more time and $ on the guitars. It a tad safer, lol. I do still plan on headers and a mildish cam at some point, just to have a bit more fun, and I'll still likely do so performance driving events, but full blown racing is out.
