Ohio couple accused of double murder in shooting over drug deal gone bad in Columbus

A blonde beauty and her baby-faced boyfriend are charged with a double murder in a shooting over a drug deal gone bad in Ohio, police said.

Mia Shamis, 19, and Connor Jeffries, 21, were arrested Wednesday, a day after Jeffries fatally shot two men the couple knew well in a parking lot on Columbus’ Far East Side, according to the Columbus Division of Police.

A judge on Thursday set bond at $1 million or more for both Jeffries and Shamis, who has posed in short shorts and a spaghetti strap top and other outfits in modeling images on Facebook.

Video from the courtroom from WBNS-TV showed the jail uniform-clad Shamis with a horrified expression on her face during her hearing. Jeffries, who is on a precautionary safety watch in jail, appeared in court wearing a blanket over his body, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Police identified the couple’s victims as Gary Ashton Francis, 20, and James Earl Miller Jr., 21. All four people involved in the broad-daylight shooting graduated from high school in 2013 and 2014 in the Pickerington Local School District, about 20 miles east of downtown Columbus, the Dispatch reported.

"This incident has been a tragedy for the family and friends of everyone involved," Superintendent Valerie Browning-Thompson said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. We have let our students know that if they wish to discuss their thoughts or feelings about this with someone, we have trained counselors available at both high schools."

Francis died immediately in the 2:11 p.m. shooting and hospital staff pronounced Miller dead less than an hour later, according to police. Investigators believe Jeffries walked over to the Dodge Charger where they were sitting behind an Enterprise Rent-A-Car on Tussing Rd. and fired into the vehicle at them after a short conversation.

It wasn't immediately clear what led to the shooting and what drug it involved, and representatives for the police department didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday night. Investigators acted on the many tips they received and reviewed camera footage of it before arresting the couple, according the the Dispatch.

Police said Shamis had driven Jeffries to the parking lot in a Chevrolet Malibu and sped away with him after the shooting. They were arrested Wednesday, and police obtained a warrant to search the Violet Township home where they lived together.

The mother of Miller, one of the two victims, spoke tearfully to reporters at the couple’s court appearances Thursday.

“They gunned down my baby,” Tisha Miller said. “Nobody has the right to take anyone's life.”
