Sean Green has spoken out about how his life has changed since getting the lower half of his face tattooed.

Although the 26-year-old has had a bold, black, geometric pattern tattooed from his left cheek to the right, he insists that when he looks in the mirror, he ‘doesn’t even see the tattoos’.

He also feels that this may also be the reason he wants to get more and more ink, as each added inking soon becomes invisible to him when he looks at himself daily.

His ink was produced by 32-year-old Cammy Stewart, a tattoo artist who has the entirety of his face and head tattooed.

Before tattooing the face, he made sure Sean was 100% aware of what he was doing and of the negative impact the facial tattoo may have on his every day life:

‘I said to him, “are you sure you want to do that? Because it can have a negative impact on you unfortunately”,’ he said in an interview with BBC News.

‘But, I suppose the more people that take a leap of faith and do it, the less judgement that will be passed upon him.’

Even after hearing the risks, Sean was adamant that he was getting it done. He said: ‘I’m going to see this every day in the mirror for the rest of my life.

‘As soon as he started putting it on I was just like, “that is the best tattoo I’ve ever seen”. I just, I love it.’

Sean’s mother, however, feels the exact opposite. She was devastated to find out her son had had a tattoo on his face and feared for his future employment.

She has even been singled out by former friends who blame her parenting as the reason Sean went ahead with the so-called ‘statement’.

‘I got more offended as the tattoos got heavier,’ she said.

‘[The facial tattoos] really, really upset me. And they still do, actually. They upset me for a long, long time.

‘I don’t know if Sean at that time, or even now, has the concept of what this is going to be like for him in 20 years. I think in a lot of ways he’s not going to be able to do the work he’s always wanted to do. I don’t think he’ll ever get to do it.’

And, as most of us know, our parents are always right.

Just a couple of days after getting the tattoo, Sean attended his shift, working on a platform in the North Sea.

He was expecting an upcoming promotion but half an hour into his shift, he was called aside by his manager and informed that he was no longer being considered for promotion due to his bold new tattoo.

Sean’s fiancée, 22-year-old Laura Cantwell, doesn’t mind Sean’s new tattoo. But, having met him without it, it did take her a while to let the fact her fiance’s face looked completely different sink in.

Laura said: ‘The first tattoo that I saw really, was on his neck, nothing like he is now.

‘It took my breath a way a little bit. I didn’t think it would be so bold. It was quite in your face. I felt a little bit sick – but I think that was the shock.’

Noting that she was quick to accept the tattoo, she’s noticed others – including strangers – haven’t been so understanding.

Although the reaction hasn’t bothered Sean, it’s affected Laura.

‘Going out in public, it changes your life,’ she said.

‘People look at Sean and they’re terrified, on a daily basis.

‘It doesn’t bother Sean and it never has, but for me, it’s been a bit of a long process to accept the fact.’

Although Sean doesn’t regret his tattoo, he now feels concerned for his young daughter, Skye. He said: ‘It’s something that I’m concerned about, for Skye’s sake. But that’s all, really.

‘I don’t want her to be singled out but I can only hope that she’s like me and takes pride in her family. You know, that’s just the way her dad is.’
