It’s bad enough when you’re out with friends and you have to split the bill.

When you’ve had a few glasses of wine, it’s even worse.

But what happens when your restaurant bill just doesn’t seem to add up – even when you’ve used about three smartphone calculators to work it out?

Well this riddle does just that and has left the internet baffled by where the mystery £1 went.

It’s based on three friends who split a £30 bill at the end of their meal. They each hand the waiter £10 and think they’re on their way.

But the waiter makes a mistake and instead of £30, the group should only have been charged £25.

So, trying to figure out how to split £5 evenly, he hands each diner £1 from the extra £5 and keeps £2 for himself.

Each of the diners get £1 back which means they each paid £9 for their meal, bringing the total to £27.

The waiter then keeps £2, which brings the total to £29… so where’s the extra £1?

Apparently, it’s not actually missing. It’s all down to how you approach the calculation.

If you add it up with the new total cost of the meal, which is £25, plus the £3 given to the diners and the £2 kept by the waiter, it comes to £30. Ta-dah!

This type of brainteaser is called an informal fallacy and means there’s an error in the way you are working out the solution.

I've seen variations of this every now and then. It's just a misdirection riddle really. Takes a bit of thinking, but it is rather simple eventually.

30 = 1 (person 1 hand) + 1 (person 2 hand) + 1 (person 3 hand) +2 (waiter's hand) + 25 (register)

I have not looked at the spoiler but if the bill was 30 and supposed to be 25 and the waiter then gave the 3 customers 1 back a piece then that's not a total of 27. 25+3 =28 not 27. Which means each customer paid 9.333333333 a piece not 9. The 1$ missing is there bad math, its in the .33333333333333333333333x3

Which means each customer paid 9.333333333 a piece not 9.

:-s No they didn't, they paid £10 each then were given £1 each back........ i dunno how mathematics works in the States but over here 10 minus 1 equals 9

Dont look at what the individual paid just look at the totals 30-5=25 25+3=28 28/3= 9.333333333333333333

You just put in black and white "each customer paid 9.333333333 a piece not 9" which is incorrect :nono: If i put down £10 then get £1 handed back to me then i have paid £9 total

See, it is a mind fryer!

30 TOTAL, minus 5 is 25 add the 3 they receive back is now 28. The three people have now paid 28 total which divided by 3 is 9.3333333333333333333333333 and so on

for example, most people, when faced with 911, resort to something called "alief" ;)
