Kit Kat has launched a bizarre new chocolate bar which might leave even Willy Wonka scratching his head and asking: 'Why?'

The new Melon & Cheese-flavoured four-fingered snack is being sold at airports in Japan and, if successful, is expected to be rolled out further afield.

The 'Hokkaido Melon with Mascarpone Cheese’ chocolate-coated wafer biscuit bar - to give it its full title - is also being tested on sale alongside other Kit Kat flavours: 'Japanese Strawberry' and 'Uji Matcha', which is a type of tea.

It is understood to be made using genuine melon and the Mascarpone cheese powder sandwiched between its wafers and then drizzled in white chocolate.

Initial online response to the new brand so far is largely negative, with Twitter users reacting to the idea with tweets saying: 'gross', 'ewww?', 'no, just no' and 'proves there is no God'.

Nobody claims to have actually tasted one yet... or at least will admit to it.

But there may be hope, with one user @superrobertson saying: "Melon and cheese flavoured Kit Kat is so insane i would actually buy one and try it... imagine if it was good?"

The bar was originally invented in York, England, as "Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp" in 1935 and later renamed Kit Kat.

Nestle bought Rowntree's in 1988 which has since gone on to launch a variety of new Kit Kat flavours globally, especially in Japan where its range has included ginger ale, soy sauce and creme brulee.

In the meantime Brits will have to make do with boring old Orange, Dark and Mint flavours alongside the classic original.

Why? Because Asia man

My Asian coworkers bring the most wonderfully bizarre shit back from China, Korea, Japan all the time. I thought tomato flavored Pocky Sticks would be disgusting but they're AWESOME, sort of like a savory crack/chip. Green tea Kit kats might be my favorite chocolate bar on earth. So shit, I'd try this. Why not. Most of us have snacked on apples and cheese. Maybe the creator of this is onto something.

I would try it too. Mascarpone is very creamy, full and soft tasting stuff. I think it works well for berry and fruit based desserts, so why not for this? I think it could actually be good.
