Writer/filmmaker Josh Boone, who directed 2014's The Fault in Our Stars, is adapting Anne Rice's novels - Interview with The Vampire and The Vampire Lestat - into a new movie titled The Vampire Chronicles.

The role of bloodsucking lead vampire Lestat was made famous in the original 1994 film by Tom Cruise, who starred alongside Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst and Christian Slater in the movie.

Now, Boone has seemingly confirmed his leading man will be Jared Leto in a post on Twitter.com.

"Lestat - there can be only one," he captioned an image of the Dallas Buyers Club star.

And Christopher Rice, son of novelist Anne, further fuelled rumours by tweeting, "We're so excited about this and @JoshBooneMovies. Lots of great things to come. Stay tuned!"

Last month (Apr16), Boone shared a photo of the finished script on Instagram.com, confirming that the film has gone into pre-production. Backed by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, the movie has yet to have a release date.

As well as Tom Cruise playing the vampire Lestat, Stuart Townsend also took on the role in 2002's Queen of the Damned, which co-starred late R&B singer Aaliyah.

Leto has yet to comment on the new project. He is currently gearing up for a big promotional tour for Suicide Squad, in which he stars as the Joker alongside Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne. The film is due to be released in August (16).
