Spare a thought for Alexander Brady, who broke a woman’s arm but is now pleading to be spared jail because he’s frightened.
‘Manipulative and abusive’ Brady, a former AA manager, followed his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend around Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester, hurling abuse, until finally, ‘foaming at the mouth’ in rage, he grabbed her and threw her to the ground with such force that he broke her left forearm.
Yesterday, his lawyer said that his client found jail ‘massively intimidating’ after he was remanded in custody for two other attacks on his ex-partner while he was drunk and high on amphetamines.
‘He describes custody as horrendous, massively intimidating,’ said Simon Gurney, defending.
‘He spends his days dreading leaving the cell whenever the cell door is open.’
His pleas were rejected by the judge, who said his victim was ‘paranoid, anxious and scared’ because of his behaviour.
In the weeks before the October 2015 attack, Brady had sent the victim a string of abusive messages on Facebook. He had choked and threatened to kill her at an attack in his home.
The 33-year-old has been jailed for 14 months after he admitted to two charges of assault causing actual bodily harm.
‘Only a custodial sentence can properly follow to mark the persistence of your offending,’ said the judge.
