The L.A. school board's decision to stop serving flavored milks on campuses is just the beginning.

A menu overhaul is underway that will mean fewer meals that resemble fast food and more vegetarian offerings. Spinach tortellini in butternut squash sauce and California sushi rolls, along with many ethnic foods, are to be added.

Corn dogs, chicken nuggets and other breaded items are out, said Dennis Barrett, food services director.

Megan Bomba, a project coordinator with Occidental College's Urban and Environmental Policy Institute, agreed with the move, saying "the meal needs to be better, not [that] we need to keep chocolate milk" to attract students to the cafeteria, she said.

The menu proposed for fall sounds more appealing and sophisticated, she added.

The district banned sodas on campuses in 2004, starting a trend followed by the state as well as districts across the country. Later that year, the school board passed a motion to ban the sale of junk food during the school day by restricting the calories and fat content in snack foods.

A lot of kids in LA have one meal and its at school, so it would be good to get them something healthy instead of all the garbage they are serving normally.

Absolutely! Proper food is in close relation to good success in studying also. Lots and lots of benefit from feeding the kids proper food.

Ehhh... Do you really trust the school system to prepare sushi properly and more importantly, safely?

You should see what an American public school cafeteria looks like ;)

But aren't they trying to change that with this? I mean...surely the cafeteria's need to change too and not just the food served in them. A proper overhaul of school meal image.

The United States is kinda broke at the moment...it would be kinda hard to justify renovating the cafeterias while laying off teachers, especially in California where the state is beyond broke. I have no idea where they think they are gonna get the money for this.

Going out for sushi for lunch is as cheap or cheaper than fast food here. $2.50-$4.00 a roll (that's after mark-up) and kids would only need one fair sized one.

I'm sure it'll be soft-core sushi. Nobody is going to feed Sashimi (sushi with raw fish) to picky grade-schoolers. Kappa roles and Cali roles: Rice, seaweed, imitation crab (which is just white fish - snapper or something cheap and lean), and cucumber. Healthy and delicious, most kids will eat it with some exposure which is good for them anyways.

And in terms of food safety, it's a lot better than raw chicken or especially ground beef (which Americans are allowed to eat rare!!). I eat sushi at least once a week and have never been sick. The Japanese live a lot longer than we do :P

But I do agree it's not going to work on its own. Studies all show... it's exercise and activity that is really the tipping point. You can skip a meal a day and still be fat if you just play video games all afternoon.

In my experience (and ive worked as a chef) sushi is easier and safer to prepare than Chicken.
and considering recent price increases, its cheaper too.

Maybe they should also try cooking lessons for those kids so they'll learn how to make decent food themselves and for their prospective kids

Jamie Oliver had the right idea, teach the kids about food. They will decide what they want to put inside themselves.

Please call all the grocery stores in Denver for me then and tell them they have their prices all backwards :)

The profit margins on sushi ingredients are MUCH higher than that of chicken, unless your talking about recovered meat chicken.

People are willing to pay more because they think its expensive, but from ingredients alone, and preparing it yourself its cheaper.

Sorry, at any grocery store in Denver that I have ever been to, chicken is cheaper than fish.

maybe that's because you're further away from the sea than cali?

And because Chicken is a sales driver, they sell in stores at a lower profit margin to attract customers.
If we are talking large suppliers rather than store prices, Sushi is cheaper.

Remember that alot of sushi isnt even fish, its flavoured vegetables and rice and wrapped parcels.

Not only because of money, as said above, but the L.A.U.S.D. IS the most mismanaged and corrupt organization in the State of California! I did high level business with them for 14 years. It's a black hole that eats up money and does nothing but sustain high paying jobs for incompetent people that have NO interest in educating kids.

They can't even teach kids to read and write, you expect them to teach kids proper food preparation?

Is it really this fucked up over there? Man... I was hoping the crap you see on TV was overly exaggerated...but I guess the satire and comedy about it is not so far fetched afterall. :(

It amazes me that there is so much whoo haa about freedom and democracy in America, yet when it comes to action, and making things better for everyone, Nothing happens.

Ever. Except maybe, one corrupt organisation is replaced by one equally as bad.
I thought you guys learned from the mistakes of the old world and built a better one?

Most schools here have home economics classes. When I was in high school, everyone in grade 8 was required to take a class called 'Practical Art' and it was divided up equally over the school year between Art, Cooking, Sewing, Metal Shop, Wood Shop, and Graphic Arts. And if you liked any of those introductory classes, then you could sign up in grade 9 and up to take the full year-long course. :)

You're right! It should.

In the U.S., there are many political party's, but only two that control most everything. In California and it's major cities, and like all the other major cities in the U.S., their controlled by social leftest Democrats. The teachers unions, service unions, and public employee unions control those politicians. So there is very little a new Gov., Mayor, or School Superintendent can do to break the back of a corrupt system that took years to build.

No, this isn't just blaming everything of Democrats, but that's what caused the problems in California. Arnold tried to do something and was shut down because the powers of a California Governor are weak. So he took major reforms to the people and forced an election. The union juggernaut spent millions to kill it and they won, Arnold just gave up!

Only now in Wisconsin and New Jersey, have the Governors been able to break up the corrupt wasteful systems and bring it back into line. Just today they are comparing the Gov. of New Jersey to Adolf Hitler.

Union leader calls New Jersey gov ‘Adolf Christie,’ compares pension battle to ‘World War III’

Welcome to the new civility.

At a Thursday rally in New Jersey protesting Republican Gov. Chris Christie’s pension deal that would cut pensions and benefits to public workers, a union leader charged Christie with acting like a Nazi. And not any ordinary Nazi, but Adolf Hitler himself.

“Good afternoon brothers and sisters. Welcome to Nazi Germany,” Communications Workers of America District 1 Vice President Christopher Shelton is seen raving in a video posted on YouTube.

“We have Adolf Christie and his two generals trying to make New Jersey Nazi Germany.”

The two Nazi “generals” apparently refer to two Democratic state legislators instrumental in reaching the pension deal with Christie.

After ranting more about “Adolf Christie,” the YouTube video shows Shelton comparing the pension battle in New Jersey to World War II.

“Brothers and sisters, this is not going to be an easy fight,” he shrieked. “It took World War II to get rid of the last Adolf Hitler. It is going to take World War III to get rid of Adolf Christie. Are you ready for World War III?”

Rally attendees are seen wildly cheering Shelton’s speech in the video.

Gov. Christie’s press office did not provide a comment by time of publication.

the only problem is, socialism, communism, marxism, all claim to be "governments for the people" too - and the implementation is quite different than an emphasis on merit, its all who you know.

That stuff comes in math classes. Not in home eco.

Here home eco is mandatory from classes 7-9. Arts is always present in every class through your school life from grades 1 to 9. There are campaings now to even add more art studies to the curriculum. Wood shop is also mandatory from 7-9 and we start it already in like 4th grade or so. Metal shop we don't have, but we work with metal too in the wood shop classes. Sewing and all that we had to do in elementary already, don't remember much about it, but we even had to get "sewing machine license" to prove we know how to operate such thing. We made towels and what not. Hehe! Fun times.

If they were doing actual smoked salmon, etc... I might be worried, but they aren't:

California sushi rolls
There is pretty much nothing to worry about here. The ingredients for a California roll are cucumber, avocado, and either imitation crab meat (which is made out of cooked and finely chopped white fish) or actual crab meat... which is also cooked. Either way, I'm not worried overly much about food poisoning from this kind of sushi!

Education here in the US needs to be a lot more like what you're getting over there. I remember Home Ec being an option in middle school, but not a requirement here, and I'm pretty sure they never even used sewing machines.
