A car being driven with vice grips for a steering wheel has smashed into another vehicle in Tauranga.

Sergeant Wayne Hunter, of Tauranga, said the driver was allegedly using the grips to steer the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The driver would be charged with dangerous driving, SunLive reported.

A witness at the scene said the driver rear-ended a vehicle which was slowing for stop-go traffic control working in the area.

A SunLive reporter at the scene said there were no serious injuries, although one driver was treated by ambulance staff and taken to hospital.

The crash happened at about 4pm on Pyes Pa Rd (SH36) near Merrick Rd.

Traffic was backed up while the accident scene was cleared.

I see the problem, the vice grips are on the wrong side of the car.
