This stew found in a cooking pot at the pub was apparently 'for visiting pool and darts teams'

A British boozer has earned a ZERO food hygiene rating after a pot of 'furry stew' was discovered waiting to be served up.

The Yorkshire pub claimed it was only dishing out grub for visiting pool and darts teams.

The Albert Hotel in Hull has a 3.8 out of 5 star rating on Facebook - with many five star reviews from its customers.

But gruesome pics from behind-the-scenes reveal the true shocking extent of the "totally unacceptable" findings of hygiene inspectors.

This dish found in the pub contained particularly unappetising-looking contents

Alongside the pot of sickly stew they also found:

Out of date food
Rubbish piled high
Mould in the ice machine
Cigarette butts in the kitchen and cellar.

Inspectors ordered that the business stop serving food immediately after uncovering the disgusting conditions at the pub.

A plate of food appeared to have not have been cleared and washed up properly

It was slapped with a ZERO food hygiene rating and owners were ordered to make urgent improvements.

Paul Turner, principal environmental health officer at Hull City Council, said they had been tipped off by a member of the public.

Mould was also discovered in the machine making ice for cold drinks served in the bar

He said: "We received a complaint from a pub customer concerned about the state of the toilets.

"An inspection was carried out and the conditions were totally unacceptable. These were dreadful conditions.

"We found a furry stew and this shows what can be lurking behind the kitchen doors of food businesses.

Kitchen cooking equipment urgently needed a deep clean

"We always encourage businesses to have open kitchens so customers can see how clean it is.

"The pub insisted it wasn't serving food to customers generally but only free food for visiting pool and darts teams. But this is still a registrable activity," he explained.

In the inspector's report - obtained through a Freedom of Information request - they said: "The purpose of my visit was to carry out a food hygiene inspection of the premises and to investigate a complaint received from a member of the public regarding the cleanliness of the customer toilets.

It is not clear if this is hot drink making facilities for staff or customers

"I found the toilets to be in a dirty condition and the complaint substantiated.

"In addition, the kitchen, staff toilets and cellar were found to be in a very dirty condition and fell well below the standard required by food hygiene regulations.

"I was informed there was no food prepared or cooked on the premises for customers.

"There is clear evidence this is not the case from the physical conditions found on the premises and evidence received from members of the public.

Storage appeared haphazard in a back room

"All production of food at the premises must cease immediately until the kitchen has received a deep clean and you can provide the correct facilities to produce food on site safely."

The inspector went on to say that the amount of waste food and rubbish littered about could easily attract pests, although no evidence of their presence was found.
