WHILE the return of The X-Files seemed uncertain, Fox's CEO Dana Warden appears to have confirmed David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will be reprising their roles as FBI agents Mulder and Scully.

Speaking to press about Fox's 2016-17 schedule, Walden announced there have been "conversations" with showrunner Chris Carter to bring the sci-fi series back for an 11th season.

"I believe everyone is on board to do another instalment of the show," she said.

However, her news came with a less exciting sting as she admitted it will be a while before the new episodes make it on to television.

"Hopefully, this time next year we will have more news," she added.

Both Carter and Duchovny previously expressed an interest in continuing The X-Files' revival.

Carter explained: "I can't imagine with the ratings that we've got and the way we ended this season that there won't be more X-Files. They will find a way to get that done.

"I spoke about it briefly with Dana Walden... so there's an appetite there and... a chance certainly to find how we're gonna get ourselves off this precipice."

Duchovny, 55, appeared on Ellen DeGeneres' US chat show, where he fuelled further hope for another cycle, teasing: “I think we’re all open to it, it’s just a matter of getting everyone’s schedules to jibe. Gilly lives in London, I don’t know where I live.”

He continued: “I would love to. I think we all would. We’ll see what happens.”

The X-Files returned this year after 15 years away and was welcomed back with huge ratings on both sides of the Atlantic.

I loved it, it felt like the X-Files. It wasnt a reboot or anything. It accounts for the 15 year gap and everything. It does help when all the same people are involved though.

It wasn't "first 3 seasons" good, but it was still pretty good.
