GOODYEAR, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) -

Goodyear police say a father of four admitted to sacrificing the family dog because he didn't agree with his 17-year-old daughter's T-shirt.

Patrick Zane Thompson, 42, was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail and is facing multiple charges, including animal cruelty, assault, threats against his family and tampering with evidence.

Officers were first called to the 16000 block of West Mohave Street on Saturday for some sort of unknown trouble, but when they arrived they found Thompson lying on a sidewalk. They said he made erratic comments that he had to "do it for God" and that the "Devil made him do it."

Court paperwork states Thompson admitted at that time to putting "the dog" in the smoker.

Detectives investigated further and learned that shortly after returning home, Thompson became upset with a shirt that his 17-year-old daughter had. Investigators said he believed the shirt had to do with the devil. That paperwork says Thompson made his daughter take the shirt and go with him to a large BBQ traveler that's parked in a side yard. The smoker was lit and police report that Thompson put the shirt in the trailer, burning it.

Investigators spoke with Thompson's family, including his daughter and wife. When Thompson went back into the house, they say he got more erratic and told his family, in front of his four minor children, that he needed to make a sacrifice of a male.

According to the victims, Thompson stated it had to be either himself, his firstborn 6-year-old son or the family dog -- a small, white poodle weighing about 15 pounds. That's when the family tried to escape the home but Thompson was able to grab hold of the dog. Investigators say the family pleaded with Thompson not to hurt the dog.

But the situation got more gruesome. Goodyear police say Thompson admitted to then breaking the dog's neck and strangling it until it "could not breathe." He allegedly told officers the sacrifice was not done and that he had to put the dog in a "lake of fire." Court documents say he then told them that he put the dog in the heating element of the smoker, which was turned on.

When officers inspected the smoker, it had an open flame which needed to be put out by firefighters. They found the dog dead inside of the smoker.

Thompson, who owns a traveling BBQ trailer called Raging Cajun Smoking Barbecue, according to his Facebook page, then went to the front of his house and prayed and surrendered to God until police arrived.

He allegedly later told officers that he had smoked marijuana earlier in the day and began to have an "episode." Police say Thompson said that he had a vision that something bad was going to happen to his family and that the "Lord was going to kill him for what he had done." The court paperwork adds that Thompson stated his readings in the Bible required a male sacrifice in this situation and that it wasn't going to be him or his firstborn son. So, the paperwork says, he chose the family dog.

When officers spoke with Thompson's wife of 21 years, they say she asked for Thompson to be charged.

The state is requesting that Thompson be held on $100,000 or more in bond for the safety of the children in the home. Prosecutors pointed out that he initially stated he was going to sacrifice a male and mentioned killing himself or his son before electing to kill the family dog.

If the Bible requires it.. how can a mere man go against a god so benevolent that he would require you to kill something male?

Amendment I. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
