Two couples were cruising on the Gulf of Mexico when one of them spotted something moving around in the water. When they got closer, they couldn’t believe their eyes: It was a Jack Russell terrier lost at sea.
The four boaters quickly brought the pooch onto their boat, much like the men who went viral for saving kittens swimming alone in a river.
They then called the Coast Guard and discovered the dog was reported missing for about three hours.
The pooch, whose nose was one of the only things visible while in the water, stayed afloat with the help of a life vest. Had it not been for the life preserver, it’s unclear if the dog would’ve made it for all those hours.
Soon after, the lucky dog was reunited with his elated owner, who showed up screaming the dog’s name, Jagermeister.
“He had tears. He said, ‘I had given up. I had searched as long as I could and we just couldn’t see him, and we just thought we lost him,’” boater Shawn Sahr told Fox 13 News. “[The owner] said, ‘it’s my baby and I’m just so glad.’”
