SAGINAW, Mich. (WJRT) - A man is behind bars after presenting himself as an undercover officer at Hooters.
The man was a probation absconder, and he told employees at the Saginaw County Hooters he was an undercover officer looking for suspects. His story was convincing enough to get some names of waitresses, and what police found in his book bag was especially troubling.
The man was on probation for arson and malicious destruction of property convictions and walked away from the facility where he was serving that probation on May 8.
Investigators with the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department say 18-year-old Nicholas Fuhst walked into the Hooters in Kochville Township on Thursday night, sat down at the bar and told an employee he was an undercover police officer. He was looking for suspects in a crime he was investigating and needed the names of employees at the restaurant.
Fuhst was apparently convincing or intimidating enough that an employee wrote down several names and gave him the list. He then left the restaurant on his mode of transportation, a skateboard, but returned a short time later.
Police say he then showed the employee the list with most of the names crossed off, but two were circled. Workers got suspicious, called 911 and deputies arrived while Fuhst was still at the restaurant.
Investigators say they found zip ties in his backpack, which can be used as a makeshift handcuff.
Fuhst has been charged with impersonating a police officer and molesting or disturbing workers.
Jolyn Hollingsworth is a regional manager for Hooters and declined to comment on the incident, but did say, "The safety and security of all of our employees is our top priority for us in the restaurant."
Fuhst walked away from Tri Cap in Saginaw County on May 8, a diversion program that allows for people to serve probation at the facility instead of going to prison. It was the second time he absconded from probation.
Fuhst is being held without bond because of the probation violation.
