Rage Against the Machine recently launched a mysterious new website called prophetsofrage.com with a countdown clock leading to June 1, while Public Enemy’s Chuck D tweeted additional hints involving Public Enemy in the secret project (“Prophets of Rage” is a Public Enemy song).

At first it was thought that Rage Against the Machine would reunite for the first time since 2011, but the cat seems to be out of the bag regarding the meaning behind the new countdown on Rage Against The Machine’s Twitter account. The link talked about a project called Prophets of Rage and led to a site that was counting down to June.

As it turns out, it isn’t a reunion for Rage Against The Machine. Instead, it’s a brand new supergroup featuring members of Rage, Public Enemy, and Cypress Hill. Billboard is citing unnamed sources, but seem fairly solid on the details behind the supergroup:

Sources tell Billboard that three-quarters of the storied band — guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk — are joining forces with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real to form a supergroup called Prophets of Rage (referencing a Public Enemy song of the same name from the 1988 album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back) to perform songs by all three bands. Rage vocalist Zack de la Rocha is not involved.

The band’s debut is set for Hollywood Palladium on June 3, with a show at L.A.’s Whisky a Go Go planned as well. A 2016 summer tour is also being considered.

I believe I like what this supergroup is selling and will be paying attention come June 1. All of the mystery and teasing is certainly on the right track. And as Billboard points out, this should be a perfect storm with the upcoming election, especially if the group does get a tour together for this summer.
