The internet has been abuzz with talk of the Suicide Squad spinoff starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn ever since it was confirmed by Warner Bros. What has not been talked about nearly as much, though, is the very real possibility that DC Comics will stay true to Harley Quinn’s original storyline and, in what could be a brilliant marketing move, have Robbie’s character become romantically involved with her female co-star, Poison Ivy.

Movie Pilot notes that Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie’s character, have known each other for years in the universe of the comic books from which the spinoff will be derived, and they note that the two have been developing a sexual chemistry through innuendos for years now.
It would normally be easy to dismiss such a romance as fan speculation or fantasy — large fandoms are certainly known for imagining non-existent romantic relationships between the central characters of their obsessions, especially if that romance could involve a sex scene starring Margot Robbie. But when one fan came right out and tweeted DC Comics at their official Twitter account asking for confirmation if Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are actually girlfriends, DC answered confidently in the affirmative.

So yes, Margot’s Harley and Ivy are most definitely a romantic unit in the comics.
And guess who is likely to star opposite Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn in the still-unnamed film? Poison Ivy! It’s tentative, actually, but the name “Birds of Prey” has reportedly been mentioned a lot in talks for the Margot Robbie-led project.

Besides that, Poison Ivy is a natural fit for the film, as she is a fan favorite character and she has had plenty of interaction with Harley, the only truly confirmed character, in the comic book realm.
The internet is certainly clamoring for a big-screen Margot Robbie — er, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy rendezvous. Nearly every article that discusses Robbie’s confirmed sequel mentions that the aforementioned pairing would be much appreciated, and social media is peppered with commenters begging to see Margot and her prospective GF together.

Another not-inconsiderable reason the Movie Pilot piece points out as to why Warner Bros. may put Margot Robbie and Poison Ivy in a relationship is that the chance to include a queer relationship as a major plot point in one of its movies could be very beneficial to the studio.
It is no secret that LGBTQ awareness has been a very hot topic in the pop culture scene of the past few years. The major step forward has affected more than just the individuals it focuses on, though; the American film industry has become somewhat enamored with sexual fluidity as well. Major blockbusters such as the recent Ryan Reynolds smash Deadpool have been extremely successful, and fans say the success was due in part due to the film’s homoerotic undertones. In an attempt to continue the trend, movie buffs recently started an online petition for Captain America to appear as gay is his next film.

One can very reasonably assume that Robbie would be on board, as she has shown herself in past films and interviews to be tired of and disgusted by Hollywood’s traditional (and rather cliche) “damsel in distress” stereotype.
Margot Robbie is also completely in love with her Harley Quinn role, and Robbie has said that she will do anything the directors tell her to do as long as she gets to keep playing it.
“I will do whatever I can to keep playing Harley for another couple of years. Until my body gives out and I can’t do it anymore,” Robbie said in an interview at 2016’s Cinemacon.
