SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. —A 31-year-old woman who was arrested Sunday evening became violent with deputies and tried to strangle herself with her bra, deputies said.

After a Neighbor Watch tip at about 6:45 p.m. reported a suspicious person, deputies said they saw a woman, later identified as Christy Kelley, staggering and falling on Riverrun Drive.

A deputy said that when he approached Kelley, she tried to stand up, but immediately fell down. Kelly told the deputy that she had been staying with friends who had attacked and injured her. She told deputies that the friends were being evicted and were living in the home without electricity. A neighbor who was at the scene confirmed that information, and said the occupants of the house were making methamphetamine in the basement.

The deputy said that Kelley, who was loud and boisterous, was unsteady on her feet and unable to stand, but she refused emergency medical care or to be taken to the hospital.

The deputy spoke to the homeowner of the house where Kelley had been staying, who said she became violent after taking a drug that was not prescribed to her, and that she had inflicted the injuries on herself.

The deputy said he told Kelley that she was being arrested for public disorderly conduct, but when he tried to handcuff her, she resisted him. He said that once he got Kelley handcuffed and in the back of the patrol car, she managed to get her cuffed hands in front of her. He said Kelley said she would rather kill herself than go to jail, and she took the strap of her bra and put it tightly around her neck in an attempt to strangle herself.

The deputy said he was able to pry the strap off Kelley’s neck, but she began kicking the patrol car door and tried to kick him, so he and another deputy put leg restraints on her. They locked her in the police car, but said she remained “extremely belligerent,” got out of the hobble restraint, banged her head on the partition and removed her clothing.

The police report said it took several people to get Kelley from the patrol car into the jail.

She is being held in the Spartanburg County Detention Center on a public disorderly conduct charge.

Fine line between "crazy enough to be your best fuck ever" and homicidal.
