The SNP warned that Scotland "sees its future as part of the EU" while Sinn Fein called for a vote on Irish unity following the Leave victory, throwing the very future of the Union into doubt.

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's First Minister, indicated Brexit could precipitate another vote on Scottish independence while her predecessor Alex Salmond said he expected her to begin moves towards breaking-up Britain.

"Scotland sees its future as part of the EU," she said, adding: "Scotland clearly and decisively voted to remain part of the European Union, 62 to 38 per cent."

The SNP manifesto for May's Scottish Parliament elections said there should be another ballot if there was a "significant and material" change in circumstances from the 2014 vote, such as Scotland being taken out of the EU against its will.

Declan Kearney, Sinn Fein's national chairman, delivered a strongly-worded statement in which he stated English voters had "dragged Northern Ireland out of the EU".

"English votes have overturned the democratic will of Northern Ireland. This was a cross community vote in favour of remaining in the EU. This British Government has forfeited any mandate to represent the economic or political interests of people in Northern Ireland."

According to Mr Salmond, the result will "quite certainly" lead to another Scottish independence referendum.

He told the BBC: "Scotland looks like it is going to vote solidly Remain. If there was a Leave vote in England, dragging us out the EU, I'm quite certain Nicola Sturgeon would implement the SNP manifesto."

JK Rowling, meanwhile, tweeted that Scotland would now seek independence and David Cameron's legacy would be "breaking up two unions". She added: "Neither needed to happen."

In her first comments on the result, Ms Sturgeon welcomed Scotland's "unequivocal" vote to stay in the EU after all 32 local authorities delivered a vote for remain.

She added: ”Scotland has delivered a strong, unequivocal vote to remain in the EU, and I welcome that endorsement of our European status.

"And while the overall result remains to be declared, the vote here makes clear that the people of Scotland see their future as part of the European Union.

"Scotland has contributed significantly to the Remain vote across the UK. That reflects the positive campaign the SNP fought, which highlighted the gains and benefits of our EU membership, and people across Scotland have responded to that positive message.

"We await the final UK-wide result, but Scotland has spoken, and spoken decisively.”

She will come under considerable pressure from the SNP rank and file to move towards another referendum, although recent polls suggest she would not win a new vote.

She has repeatedly said Brexit could trigger another referendum, while also stating that she would only call for a vote if polls showed a clear majority for independence.

Any such move is fraught with difficulties. Scottish independence would raise the prospect of a border between England and Scotland, and could see Scotland joining the euro.

A legally binding referendum would also require the approval of Westminster and David Cameron has repeatedly reminded Mr Salmond and Ms Sturgeon that they promised in 2014, when Scots voted 55-45 to remain part of the UK, that it was a “once in a generation” event.

Ms Sturgeon said this week that the SNP would discuss an independent Scotland using the euro in the event of Brexit. She added that it was not party policy to seek entry to the single currency if Scotland became independent, but the pound might not be “as attractive a currency” if it weakened after Brexit.

It was the first time she had raised the possibility of a separate Scotland adopting the single currency and came less than two weeks after she said her preference was to keep the pound.

According to Nicola McEwen, professor of territorial politics at the University of Edinburgh, it would be “unlikely” that an independent Scotland could become an EU member after Brexit while keeping sterling, which would be the currency of a non-EU state.

So the UK has voted to leave the EU and the Scottish PM says the Scots should have an independence vote to get back in to the EU?

After reading everything Goof has said about Brexit, I'm sure he's really happy about what Sturgeon is saying. [/sarcasm]

I wonder if the referendum would pass now that the UK is out of the EU and the majority of the Scotch voted to remain? :-k
