A Deer River man has been charged with murder after police say he killed and decapitated the man who allegedly raped his girlfriend.

According to the criminal complaint, an officer tried to stop a vehicle at 11:56 p.m. Friday, June 24, in Deer River because of an obstructed license plate and seat belt violation. The driver refused to stop and led the officer on a high-speed chase before the driver and passenger got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. They were later arrested.

In an interview with police, the driver said the passenger, identified as 35-year-old Joseph Christen Thoresen, forced him to keep driving at knifepoint.

The driver told police that Thoresen told him he had killed the owner of the vehicle several days ago by hitting him over the head with a baseball bat and stabbing him in the lungs. Thoresen said he then cut off the victim’s head with a black machete and dragged his body into the woods, according to the complaint.

The owner of the vehicle was identified as 20-year-old David Alexander Haiman of Hibbing, who had been reported missing. His cellphone last had activity on Tuesday, June 21, and his Facebook page last had activity Monday, June 20, according to the complaint.

On Sunday, June 26, the driver again spoke with investigators. He told police that Thoresen came to his home earlier that week in Haiman’s vehicle and told him about the murder. The driver said he initially didn’t believe Thoresen, but Thoresen came back a few days later with a blood-covered bat. The driver said he was afraid, so he burnt the bat in his fire pit Friday morning.

Investigators went to Thoresen’s apartment in Grand Rapids on Sunday and asked him about Haiman. Thoresen said he hadn’t had contact with Haiman for weeks, but investigators pointed out a text message conversation between the two of them from June 20, according to the complaint.

Thoresen was arrested.

Police believe the death happened Tuesday, June 21.

In an interview with police, Thoresen’s girlfriend told police that Thoresen had told her Haiman was coming over, and she became upset and told him that Haiman had raped her in their bedroom. When Haiman arrived that day, the girlfriend said he agreed to be tied up and beaten, so she tied him up and punched him in the face and broke his nose. After that, Thoresen punched Haiman and told him he shouldn’t have raped “my girl.”

Thoresen’s girlfriend said the three of them left in Haiman’s car to “score some bud” and ended up smoking with people in Deer River and then driving to Ball Club and smoking meth with another friend.

She said they drove around the woods, and Haiman repeatedly swore at them and called her a “slut.” The girlfriend said they had car trouble, and when Thoresen and Haiman got out of the vehicle, they argued.

Thoresen’s girlfriend told police that Thoresen hit Haiman with a baseball bat and stabbed him in the stomach and lower back with a knife. She said Thoresen then cut off Haiman’s head and threw it in the woods, and he dragged Haiman’s body into the woods as well.

Haiman’s body was found at 9:30 a.m., and his head was found at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Thoresen has been charged with second-degree murder. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison.
