THE FLINTSTONES Fred and Wilma have been given a dark and gritty makeover in DC comics’ new series and fans are not impressed.

The classic 1960s feel has been replaced by an adult and realistic new tone.

The original cartoon characters were known as “the modern stone age family”, renowned for making fun of American family life.

The new update aims to satirise the 21st century modern family.

Apart from the real life look, the residents of Bedrock now have wireless shell phones and hipsters smoking vape.

Most notably the new comic’s front cover shows Fred and Wilma taking a selfie, as a bird pecks a cave drawing.

The reboot also explores more adult themes like Post-traumatic stress disorder and existential angst in a post-industrial world.

Fans have expressed their outrage calling it an unnecessary and pretentious reboot.

One fan said: “The Flintstones No 1 - well I kinda hated this.”

Another added: “What in the hell am I reading? The Flintstones are talking about war atrocities.”

One hightlighted the pretension: “Expecting a light-hearted gritty reboot of the Flintstones and noticed Pebble's reading material on the cover. “

Another said: “Somebody give The Flintstones #1 this year's award for Least Enjoyable Comic.”

Flintstones No 1 was written by Mark Russell and drawn by Steve Pugh, Chris Chuckry and David Sharpe.

The series joins another DC reboot of Scooby Doo called Scooby Apocalypse.

The new take sees the Mystery Machine team rebranded as 21st century hipsters.

ut are these modern comic reboots going to lead to new live action movies?

Scooby-Doo has had two theatrical films and a couple of TV films with an 3D animated movie called S.C.O.O.B. due in 2018.

The Flintstones was given the real life transition in 1994 with John Goodman as Fred.

The poorly reviewed film was followed up by an even worse prequel called The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.

It starred none of the original cast, although Game of Thrones’ Mark Addy and Stephen Baldwin played Fred and Barney.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane tried to resurrect the original cartoon, but after two years in production hell, failed to get Fox to take it on.
