OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -- An Omaha police officer is drawing criticism due to a statement made about the Black Lives Matter movement. The statement appeared to be posted on the officer’s personal Facebook account on Saturday. A screenshot of the post soon began circulating on multiple social media sites.

While the Omaha Police Department has not officially released a statement on the matter, they have acknowledged the concerns of those reaching out to them on social media, saying that “We are aware and we are looking into the matter.”

A hashtag calling for the officer’s firing also began showing up on Twitter Sunday.

Because the officer has not been disciplined or charged with a crime, WOWT 6 News is not releasing the officer’s name at this time.

The NDP Black Caucus released a statement Sunday in response to the social media post:

The NDP Black Caucus is deeply displeased by [REDACTED] misinformation denunciation of the Black Lives Matter movement. He thoroughly mischaracterized the movement while spouting arguments founded in racism and severely lacking in a nuanced understanding of the conditions and difficulties of Black communities in America. As an organization in service of the black community, we stand with Black Lives Matter and their calls for racial justice.

Officer [REDACTED] deeply troubling use of Black crime statistics to condemn Black people is clearly based in simplistic racism rather than any thought of the underlying reasons for those statistics. Those with any understanding of the structure of our society are well aware of bias in our systems and its pervasive effects, including the poverty inflicted upon Black communities, where the lack of opportunities in education and meaningful work promote crime. His insistence on spreading racist sentiments which dismiss evidence and critical thinking deserves condemnation from those whom he reports to.

It is further troubling that Officer [REDACTED] is making these statements on social media using an account where he presents himself in uniform. This conduct is unbecoming of an officer of the law, and as he presents himself in uniform on social media. We call upon the Omaha Police Department to moderate his statements as is appropriate for any public servant while in uniform or else compel him to stop presenting himself in uniform on social media. For the statements he has already made, Officer [REDACTED] deserves to be disciplined.

In a time where the diverse peoples of the United States are clearly calling out of solidarity between police and Black communities, the NDP Black Caucus finds it imperative that the Omaha Police Department take steps to thwart internal efforts to divide them. The path towards this solidarity is for these communities to set aside prejudice and bias and to work together as understanding and mutually supportive communities. As public servants, Police Officers are obligated to take initiative to this end, and we support all efforts of police officers so righteously founded.

You're only "right" if you agree with one side. If you state facts that contradict the agenda you're a racist and deserve to be fired.
