If you were under any illusions about whether Theresa May had what it takes to push the nuclear button, then you shouldn’t be.
In her first commons debate since being named prime minister, the politician was absolutely clear in her conviction, when asked if she would be prepared to kill innocent people in making the order.
It only took one word – ‘Yes’.
You can’t be anymore to the point than that.
The former Home Secretary was speaking in a parliamentary debate in favour of renewing the Trident nuclear deterrent – something MPs will have a say on later tonight.
As the new PM laid out the case for renewal, she was asked by SNP MP George Kerevan (East Lothian): ‘Can we cut to the chase? Is she personally prepared to authorise a nuclear strike that can kill a hundred thousand innocent men, women and children?’
To which she firmly replied: ‘Yes.’
Then added: ‘And I have to say to you, the whole point of a deterrent is that our enemies need to know that we would be prepared to.
‘Unlike some suggestions that we could have a nuclear deterrent but not actually be wiling to use it, which come from the Labour Party frontbench.’
