Visitors to Iceland are being asked not to turn the picturesque country into a giant toilet by hundreds of signs that have been placed at tourist spots.

The trend started in the town of Stykkisholmur in western Iceland where locals arranged for several of the notices to be hung.

The warning signs, which show a silhouette of a squatting figure, make it clear that going to the toilet in the area is not allowed.

Since the sign's first appearance in western Iceland the warnings have reportedly been spread across the country in a bid to stop holidaymakers from urinating and defecating out in nature.

The 'relieving man' signs have reportedly made a considerable difference by spreading the no defecating outdoors message to visitors.

Icelandic media said the signs were now to be found in almost every corner of the country.

The problem is particularly severe in Iceland because there is a considerable shortage of public lavatories, and many visitors complained that there is no option other than to relieve themselves in public.

Local officials have so far made no comment on this criticism of the lack of public facilities.

The signs follow the launch of a video earlier this year created by Iceland Academy to teach confused spagoers how to behave at the country's popular hot tubs and lagoons.

The short clip begins with Gudmundur, the head of spa etiquette, stood beside a naked man.

Heading over to the showers, spa etiquette guide, Gudmundur, begins to sing a catchy tune about washing your 'head, armpits, crotch and toes' before entering the tub.
