PHILADELPHIA — Progressives were horrified Tuesday night after a former senior adviser to President Obama suggested on Twitter that Democratic National Committee officials should have invited the widows of slain police officers to speak at the party's convention.

Shortly after several mothers of police shooting victims delivered a series of powerful remarks about the state of race relations in the U.S., David Axelrod took to Twitter to disclose what he thought was missing from the convention.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Mothers of Movement were incredibly moving, but it would have been powerful to have included widows of fallen police officers. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/DNCinPHL?src=hash">#DNCinPHL</a></p>&mdash; David Axelrod (@davidaxelrod) <a href="https://twitter.com/davidaxelrod/status/758103909391106048">July 27, 2016</a></blockquote>

Axelrod's tweet immediately attracted outrage from those who felt his suggestion demonstrated a "lack of compassion." One Hillary Clinton supporter accused him of "handing [Republicans] a criticism of the convention."
