A Deltona man was accused of child abuse after he threw a boy into a pool filthy with algae and bugs, saying God wanted the child baptized, Volusia sheriff’s investigators said.
Henry Love, 51, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with principal to child abuse. He was being held Thursday at the Volusia County Branch without bail.
Love said he was awakened from his sleep Wednesday morning by God who told him to baptize the 11-year-old boy, so he took him next door to the neighbor’s pool and dunked him underwater several times, deputies wrote in their report.
Volusia deputies learned of the incident after the 11-year-old child was taken by his mother to an urgent care center in Winter Park. The child told his mother Love threw him into a pool and she took him to the doctor to be checked out, investigators said.
Doctors found that the boy had an ear and eye infection, possibly from the pool water, deputies said.
The woman said the incident occurred at an Love's Outrigger Drive home in Deltona where she had dropped the child for his summer break, and Love was taking care of him.
The boy reported that Love woke around 9 a.m. Wednesday and made the child strip down to his shorts. He then grabbed the child, took him over to a neighbor’s above-ground pool and threw him in, a sheriff’s report states.
The boy said the pool was nasty and green and had bugs in it, documents show.
Love dunked the child’s head under several times in the unsanitary water while yelling that the child was being baptized, deputies said. He then took the boy back to his home.
The neighbor told deputies Love came over walking with the boy and asked if he could walk through his yard. Thinking nothing of it, the neighbor told Love he could, investigators said.
Shortly after the neighbor said he saw Love and the child walk around the house and the child appeared to be soaking wet. When the neighbor later asked Love what he had done, he told the neighbor, “I baptized the kid,” reports indicate.
