KALAMAZOO, MI -- A county official has scheduled a press conference to talk about a now-viral photo showing a Kalamazoo officer making what some think is a gun-like gesture.

Kalamazoo County Commissioner Stephanie Moore said the officer's actions were bad judgment at best, even if he meant no malice.

Moore has scheduled a 3 p.m. Saturday, July 30 press conference at Second Baptist Chuch, 609 N. Rose, to talk about what happened and ways to prevent other controversies.

A black photographer was at the corner of Douglas Avenue and North Street on Friday, July 29 when he snapped some photos of a cruiser making a turn.

The photos showed Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Timothy Millard making a gesture at the black photographer as he drove.

Some say it was a gun-like gesture, but Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley said it was not and that Millard was just waving hello.

Hadley said the officer routinely makes that type of gesture, a pointing-type wave.

The photographer posted the photo to his Facebook page and it quickly went viral.

Moore said the officer should have known better, especially with the tense relations nationally between police and the black community.

"It is not okay for any officer of the law to feel that he or she can use such gestures in a community where historically and presently there are issues of police brutality, police harassment, and improper police conduct," Moore wrote in a Facebook post to announce the press conference.
