CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Seven people were killed and at least 40 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday evening.

The weekend’s latest fatal shooting occurred at 5:28 p.m. in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, according to Chicago Police. A 20-year-old man was outside in the 3000 block of West Fifth Avenue when three males got out of a red SUV and began shooting.

He was shot in the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:04 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

About three hours earlier a woman was killed in a murder-suicide Sunday afternoon in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

A 38-year-old man shot a woman and then shot himself in the 5700 block of West Chicago Avenue just after 2 p.m., according to police. The woman, whose exact age was unknown was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was pronounced dead at 2:39 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, authorities said. A weapon was also recovered.

Early Sunday, another man was shot and killed in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

Latrell Gipson, 27, was walking on the sidewalk in the 200 block of North Kostner about 1 a.m. when he heard shots and felt pain, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Gipson, who lived in the 1000 block of North Parkside, was shot in the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m., authorities said.

About 7:15 p.m. Saturday, a 21-year-old man was shot to death in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.

He was sitting in a vehicle parked in the 6600 block of South Champlain when a black SUV pulled up to him and someone inside opened fire, hitting him multiple times, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he later died. The medical examiner’s office has not released his name.

Early Saturday, a melee in the Austin neighborhood left a woman dead and three others injured on the West Side.

The four got into a fight with another group of women about 3:20 a.m. in the first block of North Leclaire, and 27-year-old Marteace Rhone was shot in the head, authorities said. Rhone, of the 300 block of North Lotus, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:30 a.m.

Additionally, a 21-year-old woman was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the ear. One 28-year-old woman who was stabbed in the wrist and arm took herself to Rush Oak Park Hospital, and another stabbed in the hand showed up at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. Their conditions stabilized, police said.

Friday evening, a 21-year-old man was shot to death in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

About 7:15 p.m., Ural J. Durant was standing near an SUV parked in the 2400 block of West 79th Street when two people walked out of a gangway and started shooting at the vehicle, authorities said. Durant, whose home address was unknown, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene at 7:44 p.m.

The weekend’s first homicide happened about 5:45 p.m. Friday in Chatham on the South Side.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 700 block of East 82nd Street found 17-year-old De’Near Dashaun Scott lying on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest, authorities said. Scott, of the 6800 block of South Aberdeen, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened Sunday afternoon in the East Garfield Park neighborhood when a 20-year-old was shot in the hand while riding in a vehicle, police said. He was in a vehicle at 6:31 p.m. in the 700 block of South St. Louis when a light-colored vehicle by and someone inside fired shots.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.

At least 38 more people have been wounded in other shootings across the city since 7:30 p.m. Friday.
