IT’S well known that beer can open the floodgates when it comes to going to the loo, but a Belgian team may have found a way to take advantage of this.
In a rather disgusting revelation, a group of Belgian scientists are planning make beer out of URINE.
For the research, the scientists needed a vast amount of urine to begin.
They set up a urinal at a festival in Belgium and managed to collect 1000 litres worth of wee.
There initial aim was to test a new filter system which can extract the fertiliser out of urine so that what is left over can be used for drinking water.

By using a special nitrogen plant, potassium and phosphorus were filtered out, leaving some 950 litres of ready to drink water.
The team believe that this filtering system can be used in developing countries to allow easier access to drinking water.
Furthermore, the left over fertiliser will be used to help aid farmers in developing counties.
From 1,000 litres of urine, enough fertiliser is produced for 135 kg of corn.
Treating urine for drinking water has not been attempted on such a large scale, and the experts will now be putting it to the test in federal laboratories.
Additionally though, the experts will be using the water from the urine to brew beer.
The university team, along with De Wilde Brouwers (The wild brewer) in Ghent, have already managed to brew a beer from treated wastewater, which they described as a “nice glass of beer”.
Arne Verliefde from Ghent University and team leader of the research, said: "I know that many find disgusting, but here in Belgium we make jokes that the Dutch have been doing it for centuries.”
