If you stop your pickup truck after running over a traffic sign, deputies may cut you some slack.

But if you speed away and have a “fully grown marijuana plant” in your pickup truck’s bed, not so much.

According to an arrest affidavit, the latter happened about 12:45 a.m. July 22 in Vero Beach.

An Indian River County Sheriff’s deputy spotted a Toyota Tacoma pickup run over a stop sign at 101st Court and 87th Street.

The Toyota’s lights then were turned off and it sped west on 87th Street.

The deputy stopped the truck.

“Upon walking up to the vehicle on the driver’s side I observed a fully grown marijuana plant located in the bed of the truck in plain view,” an affidavit states.

The driver, Joshua Jacobs, 30, said he was sorry he hit the sign.

Asked why he didn’t stop and call police after striking the sign, Jacobs said he didn’t know.

Some might theorize he didn’t stop and call police because of the “fully grown marijuana plant” in the bed of the truck.

The passenger said he didn’t see the pot plant in the truck.

Jacobs, of the 7800 block of 104th Court in Vero Beach, was arrested on charges including possession of marijuana plant and leaving the scene of a crash with damage.
