Some records will never be broken. Others only get threatened after more than 2,100 years.
By Rodger Sherman - SB Nation

Michael Phelps won his 20th and 21st gold medals Tuesday night, extending his record for the most golds of any Olympian ever. His win in the 200 meter butterfly made him the first person to win individual swimming gold in Olympic games 12 years apart. He also became the oldest man to win individual swimming gold, breaking a 96-year-old record set by Hawaiian surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku in 1920.

But there is an even older record he now has in his sights:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Olympics?src=hash">#Olympics</a> With his 12th individual Olympic title Michael Phelps equal the all time Olympic record set by Leonidas of Rhodes in 152 BC</p>&mdash; Hilary Evans (@OlympicStatman) <a href="https://twitter.com/OlympicStatman/status/763187563226099712">August 10, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Typically our oldest sports records are at most 75 or 100 years old, so it's absolutely wild to think of a sports record that spans millennia. But if we consider today's modern Olympics to be an extension of the ancient games held in Greece, Phelps has now tied a record.

Phelps' 12 individual gold medals is by far the record for the modern games -- early 20th century American track-and-field star Ray Ewry is next with eight. But Leonidas won 12 titles in the second century B.C. A renowned runner, Leonidas won three events -- the stadion, a sprint; the diaulos, a longer run; the hoplitodromos, a run performed while wearing armor -- in four straight Olympiads. He is believed to have won more Olympic titles than anybody at the ancient Olympic games. .

If we're being technical, Phelps is alone with the record for most gold medals -- they didn't give out gold medals at the ancient Olympics, instead giving athletes a crown of olive leaves. He'll pass Leonidas for most Olympic titles (medals or wreaths) if he wins either of his two other individual events, the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley.

Hopefully Leonidas enjoyed his 2,000 years on top. Here's to the robot sports bloggers of the year 4,184 putting up a post about how Olympic blernsball champion Lord Glorpnax the Destroyer has tied a record from an ancient swimming man named "Michael Phelps."

Serbia really pushed the USA Men's basketball team tonight. It was a 3 point win for us. 94 - 91. 3 points. Our guys owned the game the entire first half, but Serbia came back in the second half and refused to go away. I'm afraid that our basketball team is very beatable this Olympics. Onto France.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Katie Ledecky destroyed her own world record in the 800-meter freestyle event Friday, earning her a fourth gold medal at this year’s Summer Olympics in Rio.

She’s now the first female swimmer to sweep the 200, 400 and 800 since Debbie Meyer did it in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Katie Ledecky is just racing against time in the 800m freestyle. <br><br>More swimming: <a href="https://t.co/oDAbZW0FKC">https://t.co/oDAbZW0FKC</a> <a href="https://t.co/JiDCun1uI4">https://t.co/JiDCun1uI4</a></p>&mdash; NBC Sports (@NBCSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/NBCSports/status/764288540016377856">August 13, 2016</a></blockquote>

She posted a time of 8:04:79, which left her a leisurely 12 seconds to wait at the edge of the pool for the next competitor to arrive, silver medalist Jazz Carlin from Great Britain. In third place was Boglarka Kapas, of Hungary.

Ledecky won by such an incredible margin that the images posted on Twitter seemed unreal:

I streamed the track and field and watched it on tv at the same time and I will tell you this: the online streaming has about a minute of delay, but they are showing a lot more. In between the track races, online would show the triple jump event, but tv would just skip over that and play commercials.

USA men's basketball took down Argentina, 105 - 78. Kevin Durant was a madman from the 2nd quarter on. They started off slow in the first but recovered and continually pulled away the entire game. They played really well this time around. Don't want to speak too soon, but it looks like they're pulling it together.

Budget means nothing. Olympians in the US train on their own dime. They don't see a single penny from anybody until they win their sport's respective trials. And even after that they don't get hardly anything. We don't have a development program for Olympians here in the States.

Population means nothing. It takes a special breed of person to seriously go after an Olympic medal. Most people in the US would see the sacrifice that Olympians make throughout their entire lives and say, "Nope. Screw that. I'm gonna go watch TV and eat Cheetos. Good luck."

The road to the Olympics is a demanding one — not just physically and mentally, but also financially. Between the cost of coaches, gym time, expensive equipment, and — in some cases — competition outfits, training can get very, very expensive. So how exactly do Olympians make it work while also paying for their regular living expenses? One thing's for sure: it isn't easy. Believe it or not, Olympians don't get paid to train. Yep, let that sink in for a minute.

In fact, the U.S. is one of just three countries that do not provide government funding for their Olympic program. Some athletes get special funding from the national governing bodies of their respective sports, but it's usually only a limited amount. For example, The Conversation reports that U.S. swimming provides "approximately $3,000 to national team members of its top 16 ranked athletes."

Thank you, Lance.

I don't care what that wikipedia article states, no one lives at those training centers for years, not unless they're shelling out major dollars to do it, and like Lance's article states, the athletes cover the entire cost themselves.

Nobody rides for free in this country.

Good luck."

Not going to argue the first bit because I don't know how it works over there, but you're saying australia has the same amount of those "special breeds" as the us?

Australia's a bad example so I'll run with a general case. While we qualified the most athletes at 554, the Aussies sent the 4th most at 421 athletes, behind only us, the Brazilians (465), and the Germans (425). Y'all had 366 athletes, behind the above four, plus China (413) and France (395).

A smaller country could. Assuming that things stay the way they are in the United States i.e. no government funding, then if a smaller country started a national recognition and conditioning program to churn out Olympic athletes in every Olympic sport, then they could very possibly qualify more athletes to the Summer Olympics than every other country that attends the Olympics. They could become an Olympic Sparta where all they do is train for Olympic games. Of course, the cost to the country would be astronomically huge, but it is possible. If their government injects a heavy dose of national pride propaganda and all of the countrymen respond to the call, they could possibly dominate every sport. Is it realistic? No, but truth is stranger than fiction my friend.

It's not just about physical aspects. Don't forget that there's massive dedication, a drive to be the best, that goes into becoming an Olympic athlete. It's more of a mental conditioning. The physical side of the coin is easy. Bodies can be molded very easily. The mind takes a lot more. You're not born with it. It's conditioned into them from a very early age.

so budget doesn't mean nothing?

also, australia is a good example. The us has ~15x its population.... are you telling me that all things being equal in funding and training, a population of 20-odd million will produce the same amount of these "special breed of people" that are the same level as a country with 300+million people?

I'm telling you again, budget means nothing because our athletes train on their own dime. And population means nothing because the Aussies had the fourth most athletes at the games.

The population of East Germany never exceeded 19 million in its history yet look at the rankings in how many medals they won at the Olympics while the country existed.
