A conservative Italian lawmaker wants parents imprisoned for forcing their children to eat vegetarian or vegan diets — even if it’s for religious or ethical reasons.

Elivra Savino, a member of Italy’s Forza Italia party, proposed legislation that would criminalize diets lacking meat and dairy because it lacks “essential elements for the growth” of children up to 16-years-old, she wrote in a policy posted to Parliament’s website.

She fears the regimen could cause neurological issues, anemia, or death.

The policy — first introduced in July — follows an uptick in hospitalizations involving young children for living on a parent’s “strict vegan diet.”

Doctors in Milan determined that a 14-month-old baby brought to a hospital was suffering from severe malnourishment because of its insufficient diet.

The baby weighed as much as a 3-month-old, according to local reports.

The 39-year-old politician and mother to one child slammed vegan or vegetarian diets for lacking enough saturated fats, protein and vitamins — such as zinc, iron and omega-3 — and without those compounds, such a diet would put children in “mortal danger from unwary parents who have decided to follow a philosophical movement.”

She cites “religion, ethical and respect for life of animals” as motivations for refusing to eat animal byproducts.

If parents are found guilty of forcing kids to eat veggie-based diets, her proposal suggests prison time of up to one year and if the child falls ill, that sentence could increase to at least two years. If the child dies, Savino suggests parents face four to six years in prison.
