TURLOCK, Calif.

PETA has sent a letter to the Stanislaus County Department of Public Works requesting approval to erect a 5-foot-tall tombstone memorial at the scene of a big-rig crash Aug. 5 on Highway 99.

The truck was carrying chickens, and in the rollover accident, “an unknown number of chickens in cages were scattered and killed,” according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

An image of the proposed granite tombstone shows an etched, photo-quality image of a chicken with the words: In memory of the chickens who suffered and died at this spot. Try vegan. PETA.”

PETA previously has applied for roadside memorials for animals who have died in highway crashes in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Utah. A PETA spokeswoman, Danielle Katz, said the organization has not yet received approval but is hopeful.

A news release from PETA says the memorial would “remind all drivers, including those with animals on board, to travel safely – while pointing out that we can all prevent further animal suffering and death by going vegan.”

The letter, dated Aug. 11 and directed to Matthew Machado, director of public works, is signed by a Turlock resident, Lauren Cervantes, who could not be reached Thursday morning for comment. It says the desired spot for the memorial is “at the edge of the right-of-way farthest from the road in order to prevent it from interfering with traffic.”

Added Katz, “Hopefully, we’ll hear back on the letter and work with the department on placing it in safe location. We don’t want to distract drivers, but we want to remind them to drive safe and go vegan. The point is we people to realize chickens have same the same capacity to feel pain and suffer just like cats and dogs, and we want to prevent future transport accidents. No animal wants to die.”

As to what such a memorial would cost PETA if approved, “It’s hard to say,” Katz said. “We’re hoping to hear back from the Department of Public Works on what may be possible and work with them. They could say they would accept something a little smaller or a different shape.”

Reached Thursday morning, Machado said he hadn’t seen the correspondence but placing a memorial along Highway 99 would be a matter for Caltrans.

The Aug. 5 accident occurred shortly before 4 a.m., left the big rig on its side and chickens and cages spread all over the road, the California Highway Patrol reported. A woman got out of her vehicle and began helping to collect the chickens.

Mayra Alejandre, 23, of Turlock was driving the 2007 Freightliner two-axle truck for Mings Poultry Inc. in San Francisco.
