Sellers of so-called zombie knives will face jail from this week as a ban on the "horrific" weapons comes into force.

Ministers in England and Wales have launched a crackdown on the blades, which can be up to two foot-long with a serrated edge and carry images or words that glamorise violence.

Share

The new law won't apply in Northern Ireland - but it is understood that legislation is also expected to be introduced by Stormont.

Inspired by horror films and often advertised as collectors' items, they are available on the internet for as little as £10.

An amendment to the Criminal Justice Act 1988 prohibiting the sale, manufacture, rental or importation of zombie knives will take effect on Thursday.

Those caught making or selling the items will face up to four years in prison.

Last month, Justice Minister Claire Sugden said was considering tougher knife crime sentences after the number of murders involving stabbings doubled within a year.

Ms Sugden told the Assembly that during the past year there had been eight killings that involved knives or sharp instruments. There were just three the previous year.

The minister said that while current knife crime penalties were stringent, she would think about making them even tougher in a bid to reverse the rise.

Safeguarding minister Sarah Newton said today: "This Government will act wherever necessary to cut crime and keep our communities safe.

"Zombie killer knives glamorise violence and cause devastating damage - they have no place whatsoever in our society."

Alf Hitchcock, lead on knife crime at the National Police Chiefs' Council, said: "Zombie knives are absolutely horrific weapons.

"Forces are determined to reduce the harm caused by these and all other dangerous weapons. There is no place for knife crime within society and this ban is further commitment to keeping communities safe."

Morris Bright, of the Local Government Association, said: "Zombie knives have only one purpose - to threaten, injure or kill someone - and this ban, which the LGA has called for, will help reduce the number of lethal blades in society and stop online retailers unwittingly fuelling criminal activity which can lead to tragedy.

"An industry-backed code of practice on the naming, promotion and packaging of all knives also needs to be created - something similar to that of the alcoholic drinks industry - which would promote their responsible sale."

Let's delve further.

Weapons

As you probably know, you are not allowed to carry a personal armoury of knives, knuckle-dusters or other weapons to defend yourself.

However, a person being attacked has every right to defend themselves with reasonable force and with any means at their disposal. That includes keys, rings and hairsprays.

Having your car or house keys ready in your hand not only stops you being vulnerable while searching in a handbag or pocket, but could even be used to stop an attacker.

So.... Someone is coming at me illegally with a machete. Excuse me, let me pull out my keys and hairspray.

Or maybe I should...

Shout!!

If you find yourself face to face with potential attacker, let them know what they are up against. Shout and scream as loud as you can. This is worth doing even if there is no one obvious around as you are likely to unnerve your assailant and frighten them off.

Is this still true? If so you are trying to say that my country is stupid for banning that type of knife yet yours bans a chocolate egg with a toy in it, still you have your colt 45's to defend yourself against any children running at you with one

I believe the Kinder egg thing is all about a choking hazard. From what I understand, the original issue was a very old law from 1938 that was upheld for different reasons in the 90s. Originally, we had a thing about toys inside candy. Not sure why. The original reason stated on wikipedia seems ridiculously stupid to me. I know the toy has parts small enough to potentially cause a serious choking hazard, which is why they upheld the ban in the 90s. Makes a little better sense, but honestly, if kids are stupid enough to eat a candy, take a plastic vessel out, open it up and eat the plastic parts inside, then maybe we shouldn't ban them. Maybe we should let Darwinism determine which kid gets to be an adult. Maybe banning them is going too far, but the point is doing so isn't violating anybody's Constitutional rights.

I can't really see the logic in the old 1938 law, but you can read about it here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinder_Surprise#United_States

DemonGeminiX

You know, that 1938 law might be an indirect political statement. Italy signed a treaty with Germany in 1937 which would eventually evolve into the Axis powers, and even though the war officially started in 1939 and we remained neutral up until 1941, maybe we knew what was going down in 37-38 and maybe we wanted to hurt the Italian economy by finding reasons not to import their products. So maybe we found every little reason to refuse Italian exports? Like banning toys inside of candy, where the toy has no useful purpose?

DemonGeminiX
08-17-2016, 07:53 AM
No, that wouldn't make sense since the Kinder Eggs weren't made until the 70s. Apparently, we just had a thing against toys embedded in candy.

Hundreds of people die in the US each year from peanut allergies but yet a candy egg is banned? To protect our kids we need to ban peanuts and all related products.

I'm not saying you need one, nor am I saying they aren't asinine in every way imaginable, but the fact remains, your country is doing everything possible to disarm it's people to the point of turning itself into poland.

I mean, they obviously have their reasons. Look what happened when we armed ourselves. ;)

I'm 45 years old and for the first time in my life I own guns. Had never even shot one until this summer. Currently own one handgun and one rifle.

Will also likely be getting a CCW permit before the end of the year, not because I plan on carrying all the time but because the transportation laws are relaxed with a CCW and because I fear things will get much worse before they get better in this country.

I tend to agree, I have been shooting most my life. I hadn't owned a gun until Obama got into office and they started fucking with the 2nd amendment interpretations. I now have more than one and plenty of ammo. Also, take my kids to the range so they know how to properly use a gun just in case, also for safety. If you train your kids proper gun safety you have way less of a chance of having an accident.
