A mother-of-five accused of urinating on a war memorial on the eve of the anniversary of the first day of the Somme offensive did so in front of families and was on bail for doing the exact same thing, a court has heard.

Kelly Martin, 45, is alleged to have pulled down her trousers and relieved herself on the remembrance monument in Grays, Essex, on June 30, the day before the 100th anniversary of the start of the Somme offensive, which led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

Martin was on bail at the time for urinating on the same monument in April, when there were still poppy wreaths on it.

On both occasions she was watched by families and members of the public. Arresting Essex Police PC James Shelton said he was ‘shocked’ by what he saw.

‘For me, the war memorial is something that we need to remember in terms of people who gave their lives for us,’ he said.

‘We hold them in our hearts. I was so disgusted that someone could be so deliberately offensive towards it.’

Martin is also accused of throwing a bottle at a paramedic on the same day.

She denies two charges of outraging public decency, one of common assault and one of using threatening or abusive language.
