VESTAL, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A public university in New York says the #StopWhitePeople2K16 hashtag used as the title of a recent training session was chosen for its irony and the session – about diversity – wasn’t anti-white.
A Binghamton University administrator issued an explanation Wednesday, and the title and criticism of it are making the rounds on social media. The optional, one-time session this month was organized by three student resident advisers as part of a training program for other RAs.
Student Affairs Vice President Brian Rose says its purpose was to facilitate a discussion around issues of diversity, an effort he supports, and that the organizers borrowed the session’s title from a familiar Twitter hashtag.
Much of the criticism implied that the university was teaching a racist course.
The conservative-run periodical Binghamton Review blasted the university’s program.
“This type of rhetoric is commonplace in the university, and has become inseparable from the concept of social justice,” Howard Hecht, a writer for the Binghamton Review, said. “The terrifying implication here is not that students on campus think it is appropriate to call an event by that name, but that the university seems to endorse it as the proper part of RA training.”
Classes for the 2016-17 fall semester begin on Thursday.
