SELMA, AL (WSFA) -
A Selma High School teacher has resigned and faces multiple charges after police say obscene footage she sent to a student she’s been having an affair with surfaced on social media this week, garnering thousands of views as it was shared by members of the student body.
Charlaina Lee Wilson, 33, of Knoxville, AL, worked as an agriculture science teacher for eight months at Selma High School, according to Police Chief John Brock. He identified her as a married woman and mother of a small child.
She was arrested Friday and charged with school employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19 years, rape second degree, sodomy second degree and distributing material harmful to minors.
Her bond was set at $1,006,000.
Brock says the Selma Police Department was notified Thursday by Selma High School’s principal about a sexually explicit video of Wilson circulating around the school. It was reported to the principal by a concerned parent who saw the video on their child’s social media account and by two students who stepped forward to make school administrators aware of the clip, according to the chief.
Members of the Special Victims Unit obtained the video and interviewed several students and Wilson on Friday and developed enough probable cause to charge her with four felonies and one misdemeanor offense.

“I’m told the video has been circulated by a large amount of students over at Selma High School on Facebook and other social media sites. Last I heard, there was over 10,000 hits on one of the sites. She sent it to the student she was involved with,” Brock said. “She had a sexual relationship with one student. We know of one student over there. He’s now 15 but this relationship sounds like it’s been going on since he was 14.”
The investigation is ongoing and investigators will be interviewing several more students.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office is also investigating the case.
Selma investigators indicated Wilson had sex with the student multiple times and at different locations.
Brock says Wilson could face charges in other jurisdictions because her alleged sexual encounters with the teenager took place on school grounds, as well as on field trips.
She previously taught near Knoxville, AL, where she lives, according to police.
When she was brought out of police headquarters Friday afternoon to be booked into the Dallas County Jail, Wilson tried to avoid the media outside by turning her back to the cameras as she got into a patrol car.
Chief Brock called the case “disturbing.”
“Every couple of weeks, you see where a teacher is involved with a student somewhere in the state or even across the southeast. They’re there for one purpose and one purpose only. It’s getting out of hand in some places,” Brock said. If it wasn’t for this video, it wouldn’t have come to light. This video, for whatever reason, surfaced in the last several days. From what I’ve been told, it was made several months ago. It’s been out there but the students received in the last couple of days and that’s what started this investigation.”
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson voiced his outrage over the case and said his office will prosecute it vigorously.
“We’re not going to tolerate teachers having sex with students. This is a situation where the teacher was having an ongoing relationship with this student who was 15 years old,” Jackson said. “She could possibly face a lot of time in prison on this. This is a complete violation of the public’s trust. Parents send their children to school to learn, not to have adults prey on them.”
He told reporters that "unfortunately, this is not a rare occurrence going on now," referring to two other cases at local schools.
Former Selma High School teacher LaTangela Williams served 14 months in the Dallas County Jail and is now on probation for having sexual relationships with students. Williams pleaded guilty back in April 2014 to a felony and misdemeanor for having sexual relations with two students.
In addition to the jail sentence and probation, the former educator is also required to seek counseling and must register as a sex offender. She is also barred from teaching. The district attorney has stated that if Williams were to violate any part of her probation, she would be ordered to complete a suspended sentence of 10 years in prison.
It was Williams' case that launched a state investigation of the school system that eventually led to a state take-over of the Selma City School District, and a subsequent probe found evidence of major academic issues. Several people, including the superintendent, eventually lost their jobs.
Meanwhile, court records show that Eric Martinear, identified by prosecutors as a former football coach at Ellwood Christian Academy in Selma, is set to stand trial in late September. He was accused of having a sexual relationship with a student, Jackson said. He was indicted in March on several charges, including: school employee having sexual contact with student, bribing a witness, making a terrorist threat, and promoting prison contraband.
As for Charlaina Wilson, the head of the school system revealed that the educator resigned from her teaching post.
Dr. Angela Mangum, superintendent of Selma City Schools, released this statement Friday:
The primary goal of the Selma City School System is to provide a safe and secure environment for students. All of our employees are trained on how to perform their roles and responsibilities with professionalism and integrity. The behavior of this teacher is not align with the values, core beliefs, and mission of our district. Once the incident was reported, swift and immediate action was taken to remove the teacher from the school to ensure the safety of students. As the superintendent, it is my responsibility to protect all students from harm. I will not tolerate any misconduct towards students, and I will promptly act in their defense.
